With Carmen Sandiego, a new, animated series, beginning on Netflix at the start of the year, the '90s computer game franchise is seeing a bit of a resurgence as of late. Now, Google is getting in on the act, as fans that visit Google Earth are able to try Where on Google Earth is Carmen Sandiego?, a free browser game that sends players on the hunt for the thief extraordinaire.

Indeed, it appears that Google's game is intended to be closely aligned with previous entries in the franchise, and Google Earth Program Manager Vanessa Schneider, writing on the Google Earth blog, describes it as "an homage" to the classic PC games. "It’s for all those gumshoes who grew up with the chase, and for the next generation feeling that geography itch for the first time," Schneider continues.

Accessing Where on Google Earth is Carmen Sandiego?  Is as simple as visiting the Google Earth site. From the homepage, players are given the option to "Catch Carmen Sandiego," and selecting it begins "The Crown Jewels Caper." The Where is Carmen Sandiego?  Google game can also be accessed on iOS and Android mobile devices.

This is just the beginning of what aspiring sleuths can expect from Google's foray into the world of Carmen Sandiego  though, as Schneider notes that "The Crown Jewels Caper" is the first in a series of games headed to Google Earth. This is certain to be exciting information for those looking to continue their pursuits across the globe.

The new Carmen Sandiego  game was created in collaboration with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the publishers behind the master thief as well as other popular game franchises like The Oregon Trail. What the next caper in the series will be remains to be seen, but it will undoubtedly set fans globetrotting as they try to track down the red-coated menace.
