One of the first areas you'll find in Act 1 is the Blighted Village, which has a lot of destroyed houses and is currently infested with goblins. One major puzzle that can be found and solved within this village is that of the Dark Amethyst; here's how to find and use it.
Baldur's Gate 3: Every Class, Ranked
Classic D&D classes form the backbone of classes in Baldur's Gate 3. Here's how they stack up against each other.
Where to Find the Dark Amethyst in Baldur's Gate 3
The Dark Amethyst is found in the well that can be climbed into near the center of the Blighted Village, right next to the waypoint. Make sure you take a long rest or are at least prepared for a few fights before entering, as there are multiple level 3 enemies and a level 5 mini-boss you'll need to beat before getting the Dark Amethyst. Once in the well, you'll need to make your way to the northwestern corner, fighting a group of two Phase Spiders and two Ettercaps on the way.
After the first fight, you'll enter a large cavern on the other end, and inside will be the Dark Amethyst along with the mini-boss, the Phase Spider Matriarch.
- Like Phase Spiders, it can teleport around.
- The web bridges can be destroyed to separate your party or enemies.
- Groups of eggs can be hatched by the Matriarch to spawn lots of very weak spiders.
- Phase Spiders and the Matriarch will use poison ranged attacks and will teleport around to do so from a safe distance.
After defeating all the enemies, go to the lower area of the cavern just under the spot where the Matriarch was when you entered. On the ground, glowing purple will be the Dark Amethyst.

What is the Dark Amethyst Used for in Baldur's Gate 3?
The Dark Amethyst is required to open and start reading the Necromancy of Thay, which is also found in the Blighted Village. Back in the Village, head into the building right behind the waypoint and look to the left of the counter to see the hatch to go underground. Inside, head to the far back wall and either move or destroy the top crate to reveal a lever that moves the bookshelf to the left and opens up the rest of the cellar.
In that back room, you'll need to pass a check when talking to the Ornate Mirror to get access to the final hidden room of the cellar. As you walk in, head to the room to the far right to find the
Rusted Key on the shelf, then take that to the Rusted Iron Gate on the opposite side of the room.
Be sure to disarm the trap before getting to the Rusted Iron Gate, then disarm the Gargoyle trap right as you enter the next room.
On the table behind the Rusted Iron Gate will be the book that the Dark Amethyst opens, though you'll want to make sure you have some inspiration points saved up before trying to do so, as reading this book has a few steps that can be detrimental if you fail a roll.
