What Remains of Edith Finch is an odd, adventurous, and mysterious title that was released by Giant Sparrow in 2017. The game has players explore the story and history of the Finch family, who are inflicted with a terrible curse. Many of the missions in What Remains of Edith Finch are unexpected, especially the one that forces players to hunt and eat rabbits for a hungry Molly, a member of the Finch family.
The gameplay begins with Edith arriving back at the Finch home. The first major part of the story involves Edith discovering Molly's backstory. Molly is the victim of some sort of magical curse in What Remains of Edith Finch, and it is important for players to take control of her history and learn more about the Finch family of the past.
How to Eat a Rabbit
What Remains of Edith Finch uses journal entries and exploration to tell a unique story. When players encounter Molly's room, they begin to experience the narrative through her eyes. She begins to get hungry while in her room, and so starts to eat everything in sight. Suddenly, she leaps out her bedroom window after a bird and transforms into a cat. From there, she turns into an owl. While in her owl form, Molly is still hungry, and so she begins to hunt for rabbits. The whole sequence is similar to a Studio Ghibli film, and forces players to embrace the mysterious nature of the game.
Once players have become an owl, they will fly over a field near the Finch house. Molly, still hungry, begins to search for food. Players will have to pass through the area until they see large writing that says, "RABBITS!" When players see that, they need to dive toward the animals to capture them. If players don't aim properly, they might miss the rabbits and have to search for new ones. Once they are captured, Molly will fly to a tree and, of course, eat them. This mechanic of the character taking periodic control is typical of What Remains of Edith Finch and other walking sims.
After eating rabbits, Molly will become a shark and a snake, still determined to wolf down everything she can find. This is only the beginning of Edith's discoveries throughout the Finch home, however.
