The style and design of West of Loathing might look simple, but that's part of the charm, and things are not always as they seem. By the time the protagonist has reached the town of Breadwood, the player has grown accustomed to the types of twisted puzzles, cowboy jargon, and weird sense of humor that make West of Loathing smarter than it looks.

After the main character has succeeded in unblocking the railway the first time after it was blocked, this time the bridge is out. Smee the Conductor sends the protagonist to the nearby town of Breadwood to secure some lumber to rebuild the bridge. There are several quests available in this drunk horse town, and some of them are mandatory if that train is going to make it to Frisco.

Players that use their powers as a Necromancer or the El Vibrato technology to rebuild the bridge before they speak with Smee won't unlock Breadwood, and the quests and items therein won't be available. Players planning on using these solutions should do so after Smee reveals the location of the town.

The Mayor's Office

Breadwood Mayor's Office West of Loathing

This is where most of the Errands in Breadwood can be found, but there's more to do than jaw with the Mayor. As players will come to expect in West of Loathing, not all of these quests end in a way that's expected or conventional. Don't forget to visit the Buttered Biscuit and the Bunkhouse, and always keep an eye out for Foragin' or Tradin' options.

There are seven quests, or Errands, available from the Mayor of Breadwood. Players can take on these quests by interacting with the board labeled "Problems" in the Mayor's office. At least five of them have to be completed to get the wood required to build a bridge. Two other Errands can be found in Breadwood that have nothing to do with fixing the bridge, and they only reward XP.

The Missing Mail

Exterior bunkhouse Breadwood West of Loathing
  • The Mayor sends the player to the Bunkhouse to speak with Reginald, who reveals the location of the Postal Way Station.
  • Visit the Postal Way Station and make sure to check the cabinet filled with maps. They're hard to understand; maybe someone who does this for a living can help?
  • Return to Dirtwater and speak to the clerk in the Post Office. She gives the player a sheet of postal codes that will reveal Chuck's House on the map.
  • Travel to the new location and talk to Chuck. He'll mention that he has a special tea that puts people to sleep.
  • Examine Chuck's cabinet. Find the Sleepy Time Tea and the benign Earl Grey and swap them.
  • Speak to Chuck again and offer to make him some "Earl Grey." When he falls asleep, sneak into his bedroom and take the key to the basement.
  • Pick up the bag of mail at the bottom of the stairs. When leaving the basement, the actual mailman will appear and ask to take the bag of mail back himself.
  • Return to Breadwood and let the Mayor know.

The Lumber Permit

The Visitor Permit

  • Go to Ghostwood and talk to every ghostly person there. Eventually, the clerk in the Town Hall tells the protagonist that they need a Visitor's Permit before they can buy or do anything.
  • Answer the clerk's questions about the protagonist's name, and be sure to remember them later on. There are six bars in the jailhouse window.
  • It's possible to get a Temporary Visitor's Permit and to buy a pencil, but it only lasts for 11 seconds and that's not enough time to do much. Looks like a different solution is in order.
  • There's a #4 pencil in a cactus on the bottom right. Use the pencil sharpener outside the saloon door to sharpen it to a #3.
  • The protagonist is now able to fill out a form to get a Visitor's Permit. Make sure the clerk gets the same info about the name, but respond that there are ten bars this time, not six.
  • Once the player has their Ghostwood ID, the real bureaucratic work begins, but at least the clerks tell the player where to go and how to find everything.

The Logging Permit

  • The search for the Logging Records starts in the jail. A stapler is required, and now that the main character has an ID they can get one from the supply store.
  • Get the Breadwood Report from the Jail and return to the stable to get a Logging Report Folder. Bring both items to the Town Hall.
  • The Town Hall clerk won't accept the report because it's stapled. Follow the directions from various clerks on how to get them unstapled.
  • After the staple is removed, return to the Town Hall and answer the clerk's questions. Again.
  • Upon receiving the completed Breadwood Logging Permit Forms, return them to Breadwood to get the Mayor's signature on them. It's only possible to do this by lending him the Ghost Pencil, but be sure the Mayor returns it — otherwise, it's necessary to go back for it because it's needed for the last round of forms.
  • Wait two in-game days for the paperwork after returning it to Ghostwood.
  • Pick up the permit and return it to the Mayor of Breadwood.

The Stolen Yeast

  • Accepting this Errand reveals the Ol' Schamltz Brewery on the map.
  • Travel there and defeat the Yeast Monster. Collect the yeast he drops.
  • Talk to the surviving brewer about starting a new business in Dirtwater. The player can later visit his new brewery.
  • Deliver the yeast to the Mayor of Breadwood.

The Stolen Bread

Baker Boys hideout west of loathing

Travel to the Baker Boy's Hideout and talk to them. There are several different ways to handle this Errand depending on what has happened in the story so far and what the player has discovered:

  • Visit the Lazy-A-Dude Ranch and send Louise Lathrop back to be their baker.
  • Tell them about the Kellogg Ranch, where they can find some grain.
  • Direct them to Buffalo Pile and tell them how to grind bones to make fertilizer.
  • Teach Jerry how to Forage (requires Foragin'.)
  • Bake the bread for them.

Once the player has finished one of the above options, return to Breadwood to finish the quest.

The Missing Soup

This quest requires Lockpickin' and Heat Resistence to complete. Equip an item like Wet Boots, eat a Ghost Pickle, or use a Fire Moccassion skin for heat resistance. Lockpickin' can be learned from a book that the player can buy from a variety of vendors. It is also one of the three skills the player can start the game with.

  • Travel to Soupstock Lode. Bring the bread bowls and make sure the main character has at least one needle.
  • Use the needle to lockpick the toolbox on the first level, to get a wrench and a hammer.
  • The first two soup nodes are easy to reach. The third is behind the Heat Resistence barrier.
  • Use the wrench and hammer to fix the lift and reach the lower level. Turn the first screw four times, the second one twice, and the third one six times. An alternative method is using the skill Percussive Maintenance.
  • Mine the two remaining soup bowls and return to Breadwood.

The Restless Skeletons

Fort memorium west of loathing
  • The Mayor complains about the Military Cemetary.
  • Travel there and inspect the Caretaker's Hut. He's gone to Fort Memoriam to play virtual tabletop wargames.
  • Find the caretaker, Jeff, eating chips and standing next to the gaming table.
  • Win one of the games at the table to break his winning streak. He'll get frustrated and head back to the caretaker's Shanty. It's also possible to talk him into returning using Outfoxin', Intimidatin', or Hornswogglin'.
  • Finish this Errand by returning to the Mayor and telling him the news.

The Overdue Library Book

Alexandria Ranch west of loathing
  • Alexandria of the Alexandria Ranch has the missing library book. Travel to her ranch and search the burned bookshelves to find the missing book (or what's left of it).
  • Return the book to the Mayor of Breadwood.

The Buttery Biscuit

Free The Dishwasher

Barely a quest, but still a nice good deed, so it makes the list even though it's not a conventional errand. It still rewards XP, so there's more than just warm fuzzies to be found here.

The dishwasher is trying to pay off a debt. He owes the bartender a paltry sum of 150 Meat. When he's free, he'll go to find new work in Dirtwater.

The Owl Skeleton Photo

Other than Reginald, the connection for the Missing Mail quest, the only other errand here is offered by an NPC named Hobart Buppert. He'll lend the main character an owl-shaped camera and ask them to get a picture of an Owl Skeleton.

Travel to the Petting Cemetary. It's only possible to get in with a ticket, with costs 500 Meat. Take a photo and return to Hobart in the Breadwood Bunkhouse.
