Wednesday season 1 reminded Addams Family fans that there are endless possibilities with this darkly funny franchise. While the Goth character Wednesday Addams always got the spotlight in the popular '90s movies, the Netflix series shows a new side of the character investigating a shocking set of mysteries at a mysterious boarding school. There are a lot of things to love about season 1, including the strange environment that Wednesday finds herself in along with the interesting characters she meets.
As fans anticipate more news about season 2, it's time to think about what characters could get more attention and what stories could be told. There is one significant relationship that needs more screen time in Wednesday season 2 because these characters have a much stronger bond in the Addams Family movies.
Wednesday Season 2 Needs To Answer An Important Question About Gomez
Gomez seems to be one of the only members of the Addams Family to not possess supernatural abilities, a fact that needs to be addressed in Season 2.
How Wednesday Season 2 Can Focus On A Significant Relationship
Wednesday season 2 needs to flesh out Wednesday and Morticia Addams's (Catherine Zeta-Jones) relationship. This has always been an important dynamic in the Addams Family franchise and yet the first season doesn't feature enough scenes with just these two. While these eight episodes have plenty of scenes between Morticia and Gomez Addams (Luis Guzman), there aren't enough that showcase Wednesday and her mom's unique bond.
Throughout the Addams Family franchise, it's clear that Wednesday is following in Morticia's footsteps and that she likes how her mom has always been completely herself. While they might not show warmth and affection like other TV or movie families, it's clear that they care about each other. Morticia shows her daughter how to embrace her darkness and not care what anyone else thinks. This is something that is missing in the first season and should be developed in Wednesday season 2, along with showing more scenes of younger Gomez and Morticia.
While there are some memorable quotes in Wednesday season 1, Morticia's best quotes are from the Addams Family movies. In The Addams Family, which was released in 1991, Morticia protects her daughter's quirky and strange personality, and there should be more of this in Wednesday season 2. Especially when talking to her teacher. Susan Firkins (Lela Ivey) says:
"Wednesday brought in this picture: Calpurnia Addams. Wednesday's great-aunt Calpurnia. She was burned as a witch in 1706. They said she danced naked in the town square and enslaved the minister."
Morticia has a great answer and says:
"Oh, yes. But don't worry. We've told Wednesday college first."
In Wednesday season 2, Morticia should have some hilarious conversations with the teachers at Nevermore Academy. This would not only allow viewers to learn more about her own time there, but would also show that she will do anything to help her daughter. Even though the Addams Family welcomes elements that others would say should be left in a horror movie, Morticia can't help but be afraid for her daughter's safety, especially since Wednesday discovered the Hyde Monster last season. It would make sense if Morticia checked in more at the school and made sure her daughter was okay. It would also be interesting if Morticia got a job at Nevermore Academy since this would give her more screen time.
There's also an opportunity for Wednesday season 2 tell a compelling and relatable story about a mother/daughter relationship. Since they are very similar, Morticia understands that her daughter wants freedom and independence and can remember what it was like when she was at Nevermore. While Wednesday needs to bond with a group, she also needs to spend more time with her mom since the two have always had a great connection. But the second season should also introduce some conflict between the characters since Wednesday wants to find out who she is without her mom's influence.
What Happened Between These Characters In Wednesday Season 1?
Morticia Addams isn't in much of Wednesday season 1, which is why she should have a bigger role in the second season. While she plays an important part in the Addams Family franchise movies and previous TV shows, she doesn't appear much on the Netflix series. However, Morticia's marriage to Gomez is highlighted, and they are as romantic and cheesy as they have always been.
There aren't many scenes between Wednesday and Morticia, though, which is too bad. Morticia drops Wednesday off at school and is also scared when Gomez gets arrested for killing Garret Gates (Lewis Hayes). Morticia hopefully won't be the only Addams Family character with more scenes in Wednesday season 2 because that is one missing element from the fascinating first season.
Although Morticia isn't featured all that much, Catherine Zeta-Jones enjoyed starring in Wednesday season 1. According to The Daily Mail, she said:
"When Tim Burton asked me to do it, I was like 'whatever you want me to do Tim!' And then the idea of me playing Morticia, who's such an iconic, wonderful, juicy character was wonderful. It turned out so much better than I think anybody anticipated."
