David Haddad, the president of Warner Bros. Games, is leaving his position and the company following the troubled launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Released in 2024, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League failed to find a dedicated playerbase and has been criticized for its gameplay and live service elements.
Over the past year, WB Games has continued to lose favor with fans following a series of poorly received releases. Along with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the free-to-play fighting title MultiVersus also underperformed, with players lamenting the game's monetization methods and lack of offline play. Despite the massive success of Hogwarts Legacy in late 2023, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, released in September 2024, failed to make an impression on fans, with many frustrated by its lackluster graphics and repetition.
The Aftermath of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Paints a Clear Portrait of Batman’s Arkhamverse
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's story has ended and with it Batman's Arkhamverse future has a fairly blank canvas to work with.
According to Variety, David Haddad will step down after leading WB Games for 12 years. “I am so proud of everything we’ve accomplished together at Warner Bros. Games during my time with the company,” Haddad said. “It has been an absolute pleasure working on and building our iconic gaming franchises, and I will continue to be an enthusiastic supporter of this talented team’s future endeavors." Haddad will remain at the company for the next three months as a replacement is chosen. In a recent financial call, David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discover, confirmed that WB Games was "substantially underperforming," with the plan now being to largely focus on the Hogwarts Legacy sequel and its DC titles.
Warner Bros. Games President David Haddad Leaves Company After 12 Years
In December 2024, it was announced that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League would get its last new piece of content in January 2025, marking the end of the title's live service. The title's bumpy launch was largely unexpected by fans, as it was developed by Rocksteady, the studio behind the beloved Batman: Arkham games. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's poor critical and commercial response even led to layoffs at Rocksteady in September 2024, with underwhelming sales directly cited as a reason for the decision. Warner Bros. Has revealed that it took an incredible $200 million loss on the game, later reporting in May 2024 that it had seen a decline of 41 percent in year-over-year revenue due to the game's poor performance.
The future of WB Games remains uncertain, though the release of a Hogwarts Legacy sequel will likely provide the company with a huge boost in player trust and much-needed revenue. While many are also excited about the highly anticipated Wonder Woman game, a developer working on the project claims that it won't be hitting shelves until at least 2026. Unfortunately, the title was announced before its actual development had begun, which explains the current lack of meaningful updates.
