After lengthy delays and long periods of silence, Watch Dogs Legion finally got its moment in the sun thanks to the Ubisoft Forward summer event. The title led off the show with an extremely stylish animated trailer as well as a ton of new details in a gameplay focused one. Fans saw multiple ways in which they could tackle missions thanks to the ability to recruit basically any NPC character in the game. The segment also saw a surprise visit from none other than Phil Spencer.
While the Head of Xbox is a notable fan of Ubisoft's own Assassin's Creed franchise, Spencer was on hand to discuss a bit more information on the Xbox Series X version of Watch Dogs Legion. Before introducing the next segment of the show which featured all new gameplay for Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Spencer confirmed that Ubisoft is utilizing DirectX Raytracing to create a detailed and immersive version of London for the Series X version of Watch Dogs Legion.
In addition, Spencer also confirmed that Ubisoft is supporting the Smart Delivery system for Watch Dogs Legion, so any players who pick the game up on the Xbox One can get free access to the next generation version once it's ready on the Series X. Watch Dogs Legion joins a growing list of titles like Cyberpunk 2077 that have already confirmed support for the Xbox Smart Delivery system in anticipation of the jump to next generation consoles. This system encourages players to go grab a game at launch rather than waiting for the Xbox Series X version as they can get the new version completely free.
In addition to the next gen news, fans learned that Watch Dogs Legion won't have just one, but two villainous characters that will need to be dealt with. Running the technologically sound Albion forces who are trying to make London a police state is Nigel Cass. On the other side of the coin is Mary Kelley, the head of the most powerful crime syndicate in London and someone who is known for blackmarket activity like organ harvesting.
Patient fans also got the news they were hoping for as Ubisoft finally confirmed the game's new launch date. Fans can take back London on October 29 for PC, Xbox one, and the PlayStation 4. No word yet on when the next generation version will be available but thanks to the Smart Delivery system, Xbox players will be able to jump in free of charge. Hopefully Sony follows suit with a similar arrangement for PlayStation fans.
