With four different careers in Warhammer Vermintide 2, choosing the best build with Markus Kruber is a daunting task. The character gets access to a large variety of weapons, can attack from range or up close, and can play tank, support, or damage.
There will naturally be no consensus possible. Warhammer Vermintide 2 has balanced these classes as well as can be imagined, no single class is objectively regarded as the lowest in the community. But there is one particular build that stands out for Markus. Teams always love that specific career as a teammate, especially with an ideal loadout.
Career
- Mercenary
The are many good choices when debating which class is best. With deference to Foot Soldier, healing damage is more reliable than preventing it. Marksman has good damage, but gets headshot dependent and lacks offense against hordes. And the Grail Knight depends on lucky Benisons to work with the group compositions.
Markus is the best healer in the entire game with his Mercenary career with little debate. He also takes wide swings for extra horde-clearing capabilities with cleaving strikes. With a bit of tinkering, he can also be a great help against monsters and bosses.

Markus makes himself a tank right at level five when he heals based on enemies that he hits. Since the Mercenary should always be performing attacks that hit multiple enemies, they should be getting temporary health with every swing.
It will take a while to beat the game and even longer to max out this class. But it's worth it. The amount of support and offensive output Markus provides is fantastic. For solo players, programming the bots to use this build will be a boon that greatly increases the team's odds of victory.

Using a shield for Markus is counter to the build; he heals by dealing damage. As soon as he's blocking attacks regularly, he's lost the concept of his career. To maximize the Mercenary buffs that occur when striking multiple opponents, use the Executioner's Sword as every swing is quick and horizontal. All attacks that swing vertically or jab waste the Mercenary's talents.
The Blunderbuss is preferable to the other weapons because the only time Markus will need to use it is when striking a Special from afar. In this instance, the best thing to do is use a ranged weapon that can kill the creature with one hit anywhere on the body like the Blunderbuss is capable of doing.
Farm up the red veteran items as soon as possible. For all the Mercenary's strengths, the class does have to stay alive on the frontlines. If the player is undergeared, then this is a fatal place to be and the Mercenary will struggle to deal the damage required to heal himself and stay alive.
Warhammer Vermintide 2 is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
