Warframe celebrated its 11th anniversary on March 25, 2024. The free-to-play ARPG is still going strong, regularly peaking at over 50,000 concurrent players on Steam alone. It's also still finding new audiences, as most recently underlined by the Warframe iOS port, which debuted back in February 2024. The game's 1999 expansion was first teased back in August 2023, with Digital Extremes later confirming that it's planned to drop in December 2024.

The Warframe developer has now taken to The Game Awards 2024 to finally commit to a concrete release date for 1999, with game director Rebecca Ford taking the stage to reveal that the expansion will drop on Friday, December 13. Digital Extremes also used the awards ceremony as an opportunity to premiere a new gameplay trailer for Warframe: 1999, which features nearly two minutes' worth of mostly action-packed footage.
1999 Billed As Warframe's 'Most Ambitious Addition' To Date
The Canadian studio is touting 1999 as "the most ambitious addition" to Warframe it ever produced, which is quite a promise for a live-service game known for delivering some absolutely massive expansions. In this particular instance, Warframe: 1999 is set to introduce yet another single-player quest, the 59th Warframe called Cyte-09, two new enemy factions, and four additional mission types, among other novelties. The expansion will also debut the game's first-ever lineup of transforming cosmetic skins that come fully voiced.
True to its name, Warframe: 1999 won't be lacking in references to the final decade of the 20th century, as its storyline will have players travel to an alternate version of 1999 in order to defend the city of Höllvania against the Techrot infestation and Scaldra army. To that end, they will team up with six of The Hex's Protoframe members in order to take down Dr. Entrati, the mysterious figure responsible for the sorry state of the expansion's world.
Warframe Celebrating 1999's Launch With Balatro Collaboration
Digital Extremes is celebrating the imminent release of Warframe: 1999 with a Balatro collaboration. The newly confirmed crossover allows Balatro players to customize their King, Queen, and Jack cards with some of the most recognizable Warframe suits: Volt, Mag, and Excalibur. This free content drop was introduced as part of Balatro's Friends of Jimbo 3 update, which rolled out to PC, consoles, and mobile devices a few hours ahead of the TGA 2024 ceremony on December 12.
