What is Wandance About?
A New Addition to the Dance Anime Subgenre
Wandance is a manga by Coffee that follows Kaboku Kotani, a first-year high school student with a stutter who just wants to live a quiet, understated high school life, since his speech impediment already alienates him from others. When he sees Hikari Wanda, a fellow first year at the same school, dancing her heart out like no one is watching, Kaboku wonders if he could one day be as free as she seemed that day, and decides to join the dance club.
Wandance has been running in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon magazine since January 2019, spanning 13 volumes that have reportedly reached a mark of 900 000 copies in circulation. The English version of Wandance is licensed for release by Kodansha USA.
As mentioned previously, the upcoming Wandance anime is being produced by Madhouse; the studio behind titles like Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Death Note and Bakuman, in collaboration with Cyclone Graphics. Michiya Kato serves as director, and K-Pop choreographer RIEHATA is serving as dance producer. No further staff information is available as yet. Koki Uchiyama, best known for playing Tomura Shigaraki in My Hero Academia, is cast in the role of Kaboku Kotani, alongside Hina Yomiya, who played Anna Yamada in The Dangers of My Heart (and, strangely enough, Anna Yamada in Twi-Yaba).
