A song from the soundtrack for the 2016 Doom reboot recently surpassed 100 million streams on the music streaming app Spotify, marking a huge milestone for the game and its composer, Mick Gordon. The song in question is the heavy metal "BFG Division" from the game's official soundtrack, one of the main tracks that plays during the many action setpieces in Doom.

The Doom series has a lasting legacy in the gaming world, as the first game revolutionized first-person shooters in the 1990s and established many of the tropes gamers know the genre for today with its level design and gameplay loop. The series' lasting popularity is likely due not just to its fast-paced gameplay, but also the distinct heavy metal-inspired soundtrack, which has similarly become iconic among gamers and pop culture enthusiasts in general.

Dev Turns Doom Into a Playable CAPTCHA Test

Doom finds itself played in yet another weird way, as a developer turns Doom into a playable CAPTCHA test that's far from easy.

The composer for Bethesda's 2016 Doom reboot, Mick Gordon, recently made the series' popularity even more evident after sharing a tweet revealing that his song "BFG Division" from the game had surpassed 100 million streams on Spotify. The post consisted of a banner announcing the number of streams for the song on the service with a series of emojis seemingly celebrating the high number.

Doom 2016 Track's Streaming Numbers Prove The Series' Lasting Legacy

Gordon's work on Doom encompasses many of the game's most iconic tracks, many of which are distinct heavy metal tracks meant to accompany the fast-paced action gameplay fans are presented with. Gordon even returned to compose the music for Doom Eternal a few years later, adding more to his repertoire of metal-inspired music that has become a staple of the series.

In fact, Gordon's career as a composer has spanned numerous first-person shooter franchises, including other titles published under Bethesda, such as Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, which comes from the same developer, id Software. His work has also extended outside of Bethesda's wheelhouse, however, with some of his tracks appearing on the soundtrack for Borderlands 3 under Gearbox and 2K, among various other projects.

Despite the iconic nature of his work on the Doom franchise thus far, Gordon is reportedly not set to return to compose the tracks for the upcoming Doom: The Dark Ages following his experience on the previous sequel. According to Gordon, his work on Doom Eternal was impeded by corporate guidelines and internal development issues, which led him to feel that it was not up to the quality of his usual work and led him to forgo returning for the sequel.
