Layoffs unsurprisingly yet disturbingly persist in the games industry with many big-name developers hit this time around and some highly anticipated games being canceled before they were even revealed. Today, The Best War Games’s weekly recap takes a look at some of the most notable headlines from the past week.
A Paranormal Activity game is in development from a perfect studio, KOTOR’s remake is apparently still intact as Saber is being sold from Embracer, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth debuts a mini-game that rivals Gwent from The Witcher 3. All that and more in this week’s roundup of games industry news.
The Best War Games Recap for 02/19/24 – 02/25/24
Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree is revealed, Star Wars Battlefront is receiving a modern collection, and more in this week's The Best War Games recap.
Mortuary Assistant Devs Working on Paranormal Activity Game
The Mortuary Assistant’s DarkStone Digital is developing a licensed Paranormal Activity game. If it turns out to be anything like Mortuary Assistant, it’s sure to be entirely frightening with creative ways to scare players while they complete engaging tasks.
Respawn’s Star Wars Bounty Hunter FPS Canceled Amid Layoffs
In what seems to be one of the more surprising in-development game cancelations lately, EA has binned Respawn’s unrevealed Star Wars FPS game. The game was rumored to be a Mandalorian-esque game, and unfortunately it won’t be seeing the light of day now.
KOTOR Remake’s Saber Leaving Embracer
Saber is being sold from Embracer, but thankfully it is still said to be developing the extraordinarily troubled Knights of the Old Republic remake.
Crash Bandicoot, Spyro’s Toys for Bob Separating from Activision
Toys for Bob is becoming an independent studio and leaving Activision. However, partnerships with Microsoft on future titles still seem on the table.
Supermassive, PlayStation Add to Games Industry Layoffs
Until Dawn was announced to have a live-action movie adaptation in the works as well as a remaster done by Ballistic Moon. Supermassive itself is developing Little Nightmares 3, but unfortunately Supermassive has also announced it is contributing to the layoff culture that has been a massive element of 2024 thus far.
Features
Engrossing mini-games in otherwise sprawling open-world titles are always a phenomenal distraction, let alone fruitful side activities, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s Queen’s Blood is no different.
Movies & TV
Dune: Part Two is a sensational sequel and one that doesn’t necessarily need to lean on its predecessor as a narrative backbone. Indeed, many new characters are introduced who may have larger roles in the future of the franchise, such as Princess Irulan.
Guides
Aside from a handful of heavy-hitters yet to arrive in 2024, this year doesn’t have that many more big-name or highly anticipated titles that haven’t already been released. That said, 2025 is going to have some colossal giants in the games industry.
The Best War Games Exclusives
Inkulinati may offer a serviceable turn-based strategy game, but beyond its roguelite Journey mode its tutorial can feel dogged and it doesn’t offer anything unique in terms of gameplay.

INKULINATI IS INSPIRED BY REAL-LIFE MEDIEVAL MARGINALIA
700 years in the making, finally these bizarre art pieces can come alive in a video game and show that medieval people also had their “memes” and that they laughed from the same silly things that we do today.
