Dragon Quest is a legendary franchise that established a lot of modern JRPG tropes, from questing to leveling up. However, it took three games before it allowed players to build a party of their own, along with letting them switch classes, called Vocations, before battle. Now, the party makeup is one of the best things about JRPGs and RPGs.
Upcoming RPGs That Could Be The New Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Can these upcoming games usurp Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's rule over the 2025 RPG scene, and maybe even challenge it for Game of the Year?
It’s fun anticipating who could join the party next and what they will bring to the table, from their unique skills to their personalitites. Will they be magically gifted, super strong, or have a knack for healing? Anyone who loves a good party system in an RPG or JRPG should keep an eye out for these upcoming games.

Tales of Xillia was released as a PS3 exclusive in 2013 in North America, and it’s one of the better entries in the Tales of series. Thankfully, now more players can experience it with the upcoming remaster. If this remaster is as good as the original version and has no bugs at launch, it’s safe to say it will be one of the better introductory titles in the series.
Players can explore big open areas connected by pathways filled with roaming monsters. Combat is action-based, with parties consisting of four characters, all of which can link attacks depending on character dynamics.

Inazuma Eleven is a long-running soccer RPG franchise from Level-5. Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road is the biggest entry in years, and it features a combination of real-time and tactical gameplay. Players can attend school and make friends, but the most alluring feature is the soccer matches.
8 Best RPGs With Crossplay Co-Op
The divide between consoles is getting thinner thanks to these RPGs, which allow you to play with your friends across platforms.
During soccer matches, players can move characters around like a normal sports game, but things slow down when accessing special moves. Choosing who should be on the team is a big part of the party system, akin to more mainstream games like choosing Blitzball teammates in Final Fantasy 10.

Octopath Traveler 0 is one of the more exciting upcoming turn-based RPGs because it features large parties. Players can create parties of up to eight characters in battle, switching between two rows of four on the fly. That’s more than previous games in the series, but there are other reasons why Octopath Traveler 0 looks interesting.
There’s also a town building mechanic in the game, which is a new feature for the series. Even though it’s based on a mobile game, this updated expansion looks like the most ambitious entry yet, and it will hit a plethora of platforms at launch.

The upcoming Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is the latest game in the series, which looks to be shaking things up ever so slightly. The Fire Emblem series is known for letting players create diverse parties of class-based characters ranging from bulky knights to glass cannon mages.
The only trailer shown so far for Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave only shows four playable characters, and they all fight their battles solo. While the setting is new—seemingly based on Greek and Roman practices—it probably won’t diverge that far gameplay-wise from past entries; that is to say, it will assuredly have a party system to go with its tactical gameplay.

Sea of Remnants is an upcoming RPG that looks expansive and diverse in its gameplay offerings. Players can find characters to form their party with, but how the turn-based battles play out hasn’t been clearly defined yet.
There will also be sailing in the game, as the theme overall is based on pirating adventures. The real standout is the design, which looks unlike anything else out there. The timing and platforms haven’t been fully set, either, but it will be free to play, and it looks like it will at least launch on PC and PS5.

Persona 3 Reload did well enough for Atlus that they are going to follow it up with another remake: Persona 4 Revival. Unfortunately, there’s not much known about the game right now other than what has been shown in the debut trailer. There were some environments on display, like towns and classrooms, along with a glimpse of what Yu looks like in the remake, but that’s it.
While the remake’s details aren’t known yet, including the release date, fans of the original game at least know it will have a party system that's based around turn-based combat. Collecting Personas, gathering allies through social groups, fighting monsters to level up, and so on will all certainly be included. Whenever it does come out, Persona fans will be there on day one.

Square Enix fans have been begging the publisher to re-release Chrono Trigger in some form for years, be it a remaster, a straight port, or a remake. While the original game hasn’t seen a new release in years, indie developers have been trying to spiritually remake it. Sea of Stars is a premiere example, and it seems like the next big homage will come whenever Threads of Time releases, which looks more on the nose than Sea of Stars.
There is time travel between the present, the prehistoric past, and the future. There’s a world map and a diverse cast of characters, from warriors to mages, all listed on developer Riyo Games' website. The launch platforms are a bit of a mystery, but right now, this turn-based RPG can be pre-ordered on Steam and Xbox Marketplace, so those are two good indications for now.
