Summary

  • Until Dawn remake on track for 2024 release with mature rating for violence, gore, and strong language.
  • Announcement of remake release date expected soon.

The Until Dawn remake recently received a rating from the ESRB, suggesting that it is on track to meet its planned 2024 release date. The original Until Dawn was released in 2015 and earned mostly positive reviews from critics. Effectively an interactive horror movie where player choice can determine the fate of the individual characters, Until Dawn was praised for its surprising plot twists, performances, and impressive visuals.

Until Dawn helped developer Supermassive Games reach the next level, establishing the studio as one of the industry's leading horror developers. It was followed by the Rush of Blood VR spin-off and a variety of horror games with similar mechanics, most notably The Dark Pictures anthology series and The Quarry. A direct sequel to Until Dawn has yet to materialize, but in the meantime, horror fans will soon have the chance to experience the original in a fresh light.

Until Dawn Remake May Have Timed its Release Window Poorly

The Until Dawn Remake is set to launch in Fall 2024, but as things currently stand, it's probably going to be quite an uphill battle for the remake.

1

The Until Dawn remake is in development for PC and PS5. Planned to launch at some point in 2024, the game is currently without a specific release date. However, the ESRB recently issued its rating for it, giving the Until Dawn remake an M for Mature rating, citing Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Themes, and Strong Language. Typically, a game doesn't receive its ESRB rating until it's near release, meaning that it's highly likely that the Until Dawn remake will launch in 2024 as was previously announced, even though a specific date still has yet to be announced.

If the Until Dawn remake is still being released in 2024 as expected, one has to imagine that an announcement about its release date will be made sooner rather than later. One would think that Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 20 would be an ideal place to make such an announcement, but it's been reported that PlayStation is skipping Gamescom this year. Another possibility would be the Tokyo Game Show in September, but that seems unlikely.

There have been rumors that a PlayStation Showcase could take place in September. If those rumors are true, then it seems like that would be the most likely place for Sony to officially announce the Until Dawn remake release date. Alternatively, Sony may simply come out and make the announcement on its own, completely separate from any big event. It's unclear what is going to happen with the Until Dawn remake, but hopefully, horror fans will get answers sooner rather than later.
