As you start to grow your teams in Unicorn Overlord, you'll find that the pairings and formations of your units might not be at their optimal positions. Changing your team's positions even just by a few blocks can make a world of a difference in whether your team wins the battle.
Luckily, there is an easy way you can change each individual unit's formation, and allow each character to play their role flawlessly. Some characters are more suited for the front row, and some are better in the back. If you're wondering how you can change your unit formation, this guide will go over everything you need to know.
Unicorn Overlord: Meet the Characters
In Vanillaware's upcoming game, Unicorn Overlord, players will take control of Alain as he fights alongside a colorful cast of characters.
How to Change Unit Formation in Unicorn Overlord
At the beginning of Unicorn Overlord, you'll receive a tutorial on not only classic JRPG tactics, but also unit formations that will show you exactly how you can change your formation. However, after the tutorial, we will show you how you can access this menu again.
Whenever you are in the overworld, visit the Overworld Menu, which you can find in the top left of the screen. At the top, you'll notice 'Unit Formation.' When you choose this, you'll come to a screen with all the current active units you have, and the members of each unit.
As an example, we are going to edit the first one, Alain's Unit. Follow these steps to change the formation:
- Start by hovering over the character you want to swap positions.
- If you're playing on Switch, press Y to reposition the selected character. In this case, we will be moving Alain.
- Scroll between the 6 available blocks in the formation, and press A to place Alain down in a new location.
Keep in mind, each character has a different class that would be better positioned in the front or back row. The next section will cover some basics on how you can properly place your units to ensure their win in battle.
Why Unicorn Overlord Was in Development for 10 Years
Upcoming strategy and tactical RPG hybrid Unicorn Overlord has been quietly in the works at Vanillaware since 2014 and releases this March.
Best Class Formations in Unicorn Overlord
In Unicorn Overlord, there are many different classes that each character from the five nations will follow. This includes Knight, Housecarl, Lord, Hoplite, Paladin, Fighter, Soldier, and Thief, among others. With these classes, here is some information to know:
- Knight: These units have high Mobility, and have high defense and guarding. They are best placed in the front row.
- Hoplite: With high Physical Defense, these units are best in the front row, to the left or right of a character that needs protection.
- Thief: With high Evasion, they can dodge enemy attacks while sitting in the front row, protecting those in the back row.
- Housecarl: These are excellent attackers which can lower defense and deal heavy damage. However, they have low defense, so place them in the back row.
- Lord: Lords are quite balanced, meaning they can deal decent damage while also defending themselves. You can place them in the front row, or back row if you pair them with a Thief.
- Paladin: Paladins are incredibly powerful, and can also defend themselves. These can be placed in the front row to defend the team and heal them.
- Fighter: Fighters are especially useful against Hunters, and they have high defense to protect those in the back row. They are best suited to the front row.
- Soldier: Soldiers can destroy enemies in a column using a piercing attack. They are especially useful against Knights and cavalry foes. Place them in the back row.
Along with this information, you'll also want to keep in mind that whenever you are up against Soldiers, make sure not to place characters in a column with one behind and one in front. The Soldier has the ability to pierce through and attack both of your units, so you'll want to place one to the left or right.
