Beyond the hype moments of Umamusume: Pretty Derby's races lies the Scouting system, where players can get new characters and cards to raise. It's no secret that this is a gacha game, but for players who have come from titles like Honkai: Star Rail, Umamusume's gacha system may seem confusing at first glance.
This guide covers the basics of how the gacha system works in Umamusume, so before you go spending all of your Carats, make sure to take a gander at these important pieces of information first.
Best Characters to Use Your Umamusume 3-Star Voucher On
You can kickstart your Umamusume career with a Head Start 3-Star Voucher that lets you recruit a horse girl of your choice.
Umamusume: Pretty Derby - Scouting Mechanics
In simple terms, the Scouting menu is where Umamusume's gacha takes place. Here, you'll find all the available gacha banners where you can spend your Carats on. Banners include:
- Spotlight Banner: Features a rate-up SSR character.
- Spotlight Support Card Banner: Features a rate-up limited SSR Support card.
- Pretty Derby Scout Banner: Standard character gacha banner.
- Support Card Scout: Standard Support Card gacha banner
The Spotlight banners have set expiration dates listed on their title cards. Once they expire, they'll be replaced by a new limited gacha banner. Meanwhile, the standard banners do not expire, but they do not have any rate-up bonuses for the SSR characters that appear on Spotlight banners.
There are also one-time banners that guarantee SSR characters and Support Cards. However, these require Paid Carats.
Paid vs Free Carats
Carats are Umamusume's main gacha currency, and players can have either Free or Paid Carats. Every Carat you earn through in-game means (i.e. Missions, events, Team Races, etc) are considered Free Carats, while Paid Carats come strictly from real-money purchases.
Pure F2P players can ignore the Paid Carat classification altogether, though they do incentivize people to make small, one-time expenses on the game if they so choose. You won't need to pay for Carats if you want to get all the Umamusume characters, but these will help you get them more easily.
Is There a Pity System?
Yes, but it's not as simple as in other gacha games. The Pity system in Umamusume: Pretty Derby uses an Exchange Point system. Every time you roll in any of the gacha banners, you gain 1 Exchange Point. You can use your Exchange Points to outright purchase who or whatever is in the featured banner.
There are some caveats to this:
- Limited banners in Umamusume only last for roughly two weeks.
- When a banner ends, any Exchange Points you have are automatically converted to Clovers.
One 10-pull costs 1,500 Carats, so if you want to guarantee an SSR Uma or Support Card, you'll want to save up 30,000 Carats and use them all before your chosen banner expires.
