Ubisoft seems to be working on around 11 Assassin’s Creed titles at the moment, according to a new report. An earlier report already claimed that Ubisoft was expanding the development team for Assassin’s Creed, which now makes more sense considering it has multiple projects in the pipeline.
The Assassin’s Creed series has been Ubisoft’s crown jewel for a long time. Its Prince of Persia series set the foundation of the parkour-filled action-adventure gameplay, which Assassin’s Creed took to the next level with its engaging lore, world design, and polished stealth gameplay mechanics. Furthermore, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla became Ubisoft’s first billion-dollar game, which was reason enough for the French developer to double down on its best-selling franchise. Consequently, it is doing exactly that, as it is reportedly working on multiple Assassin’s Creed titles right now.
As reported by Insider Gaming, Ubisoft is currently working on 11 Assassin’s Creed titles, including the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Apart from Mirage, there are three other titles currently in Production: Assassin’s Creed Nexus, Assassin’s Creed Codname Jade, and Assassin’s Creed Codename Red. Two of the games in this line-up, Codename Hexe and Codename Invictus are reportedly in pre-production as well. Additionally, three games codenamed Nebula, Raid, and Echoes are in the conception stage, with Raid and Nebula being multiplayer Assassin’s Creed titles. The report also mentions that a sequel to the VR game, Assassin’s Creed Nexus, is already being discussed internally. Another title rumored to be in development is the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake, which introduced Edward Kenway to the franchise. Interestingly, Black Flag is also the fifth highest-selling Ubisoft game of all time, with around 15 million copies sold, which could be a big reason for its comeback.
A crucial detail in this line-up is that the games are a mix of multiplayer and single-player titles, with one of the games also being developed for mobile. Assassin’s Creed introduced a multiplayer mode for the first time with Assassin's Creed Brotherhood which was released in 2011, but the mode was popularized by Assassin’s Creed Unity, which still has active players eight years after its release. However, it didn’t gain any significant popularity despite several fans appreciating the innovative gameplay, so it will be interesting to see how Ubisoft approaches a complete multiplayer game in the series.
Ubisoft’s bet on the Assassin’s Creed series makes sense financially but is also perplexing as it has other IPs to focus on. Last year, Ubisoft canceled around seven games, and the future of its Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake is also uncertain. However, it is also reportedly working on two new Far Cry games, which has left fans wondering if the developer will be able to manage such an extensive roster without any more cancelations.
