Summary

  • Two Predator movies confirmed for 2025, including Predator: Badlands starring Elle Fanning.
  • Director Dan Trachtenberg pitched unique ideas for the movie after Prey's success.
  • Possibility of Alien vs. Predator and other sequels in the works with hinted release dates.

It looks like 2025 will be a great year for Predator fans, as Steve Asbell, the head of Disney-owned 20th Century Studios, has now confirmed that two movies in the franchise will be arriving. Making its debut in 1987, Predator starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and was directed by John McTiernan, who is best known for his heart-pumping action films, which include Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October and Last Action Hero. Although initially titled 'Hunter,' the movie was then changed to Predator, assumingly to reflect the creatures' more predative skills and savage mindset.

Even though the movie received mixed reactions at the time from critics due to a number of mishaps, including an unstady character development and an apparent 'tissue-thin-plot', Predator grossed $98 million worldwide and has since gone down as one of the best science fiction movies of the 1980s, claiming a passionate cult following in its wake. After many ventures into trying to breathe life back into the franchise, Prey, directed by Dan Trachtenberg, whose past work includes 10 Cloverfield Lane, earned a 94% positive review score on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest in the franchise so far. The success of the movie also saw it receiving nominations at the Saturn Awards, Producers Guild of America Awards, and the Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

Two Predator Movies Are Arriving In 2025

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century head, Steve Asbell, opened up about the status of Alien, Predator, Apes and more. When asked if the next Predator film would be getting a theatrical treatment, Asbell stated that it would indeed hit the big screens and, since Prey was so successful, director Dan Trachtenberg didn't just want to do a sequel to the film, but, instead, wanted to come up with something different so decided to pitch a slew of ideas to Asbell who initially thought they were a bit off the wall but also really cool. Asbell confirmed that two films are in the works for 2025, one titled Predator: Badlands, which will star Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding 2's Elle Fanning as the lead and a standalone film, and another Predator movie project moving forward in secret - at least for now.

“Yes, a Predator movie will have a theatrical. I’ll tell you very simply. After Prey became a success, Dan [Trachtenberg] came back and said he didn’t want to do Prey 2. And we’re like, ‘What do you want to do?’ And he rattled off a bunch of ideas that were really crazy but really cool. We’ve actually done two of them. Two are coming out next year. One I can’t talk about yet, but the other one is the live-action Predator film with Elle Fanning that just wrapped in New Zealand. That’ll be out theatrically sometime next year.”

As well as discussing the upcoming Predator movies, Asbell also hinted at the possibility of another Alien vs. Predator movie, but that it wouldn't be released on a whim as they didn't want to just "bang it out", instead, wanting the next movie to flow organically. This is likely great news for many fans who believed that quite a few aspects of Alien vs. Predator just didn't work, so the hope for some is that a handful of these wrongs could maybe be put right this time around.

Aside from saying the studio will likely continue with Alien vs. Predator in the future, Asbell also revealed that a sequel to Alien: Romulus is in the works, as well as a follow-up to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Asbell did squeeze in a release date mention of 2027 for the next Apes movie, but it seems likely that this is an estimated time frame in which it may arrive. Predator: Badlands will be released on November 7, 2025. As for Disney’s currently under wraps Predator film, it is scheduled for release sometime in 2025, but a specific date has yet to be announced.
