Some Twitch streamers are on the receiving end of questionable or erroneous bans from the platform, while others seem to get away with short-term suspensions when it seems they deserve more. Usually, these bans are for three to 30 days, although Twitch has banned some streamers permanently or for extended periods of time, as in the case of content creator Axiun, who was recently allowed to return to the platform after a ban that lasted more than two years.

Clearly, big names are not always exempt from being banned from Twitch, despite the supposed existence of a do-not-ban list, and popular esports members are not spared either. Kalei Renay, who became the first female member of FaZe Clan in June, received an email from Twitch on October 13 notifying her that she had been banned. The stated reason was for sexually suggestive conduct, which can include behavior, conduct, or commentary. Her reaction, given in all caps, seemed outraged. “Are you guys smoking crack?? All I wear is oversized hoodies and shirts…. Are you guys high??”

Renay shared a screenshot of Twitch’s email on Twitter, and viewers were quick to point out that it specified that the sexual conduct violation occurred in public or private chat messages, having nothing to do with the Twitch streamer’s apparel. Renay responded by explaining, “I literally don’t talk in chat and or streams lol.” Some of her followers were quick to agree, saying that they watch Renay stream regularly and could not imagine her chatting sexually with anybody.

The Twitch streamer has also attempted to contact Twitch support several times because she intends to fight the ban, but has yet to receive a response from the platform. In a follow-up tweet, she asked for anyone at Twitch to help her because she was “being thrown in a loop” for a ban that she believes will turn out to be a mistake. Renay also went on to express her belief that the Twitch ban was targeted, which is not far from the realm of possibility. When first signed to FaZe Clan, Renay was suspended from TikTok after being maliciously spam reported.
