Twitch is a platform saturated with different personalities and popular streamers for fans to get attached to. With an ever-growing number of content creators becoming established and consistently commanding large audiences, it can be difficult to keep up with the ensuing drama and controversies.
A large source of controversy within Twitch as a platform usually stems from the suspensions and bans that popular streamers often receive. Massively popular streamer Adin Ross, whose viewership had risen exponentially in recent months and years, has recently received an indefinite ban from the platform. This has lead many to speculate as to the exact length and reasoning behind the ban from Twitch.
Adin Ross' Recent Rise to Twitch Fame
Although Adin Ross has been streaming on and off since 2018, his online presence began to seriously grow and take hold during 2020. Adin Ross built his Twitch streaming career by playing games such as Grand Theft Auto 5 and NBA 2K for his followers, with his larger-than-life personality being the main source of viewership as opposed to the gameplay itself.
This early fame only grew as Ross began to immerse himself in the subcultures that these games foster, often collaborating with very high-profile figures. For example, a 2020 collaboration between Ross and LeBron James' son Bronny, in the form of a high-stakes wager match on NBA 2K, helped propel Ross into the limelight. From here, Ross would go on to form relationships with some seriously big names, primarily within the world of rap music.
Partaking in frequent collaborations with household rap names such as Lil Yachty, Lil Uzi Vert, and Tory Lanez, Ross began to establish himself as somewhat of a hub of rap culture content through his streams. Before his most recent ban, Adin Ross had amassed close to six million followers on Twitch, with his peak concurrent subscriber count being at a massive 71,318.
Adin Ross' Recent Twitch Ban
Recently, the intense popularity that Adin Ross had enjoyed was significantly stifled, with Ross receiving an indefinite ban from Twitch. While temporary bans are quite commonplace within the wider Twitch community, even among popular streamers, the receiving of an indefinite ban for such a big creator is always sure to attract attention.
The reasoning behind this most recent and severe ban inflicted on Ross has not been officially confirmed by either Ross or Twitch itself, although many have drawn their own conclusions from the information available to them. It appears Ross' ban can be attributed to his recent appearance on fellow Twitch creator YourRage's stream.
Appearing on the stream via phone call, Ross seemingly referred to someone by a homophobic slur. Although both parties denied that the man on the call was Ross, the content of the conversation and the voice itself appear to confirm that it was him. This is not to say that Adin Ross isn't a stranger to controversy prior to this recent ban. Adin Ross has been banned from Twitch several times prior to this, although never permanently like the most recent ban.
These past bans can be attributed to things like streaming while driving, or others on his streams also using similar homophobic slurs. As well as his past bans, Ross has also been the source of controversy to due to his numerous gambling sponsorships, which have drawn criticism across the platform for the potential glorification of gambling via sponsored streaming. With Ross also receiving criticism due to his brand of humor being built upon exaggerating homosexual tropes for comedy, it is perhaps more clear as to why Twitch has taken such serious action against him.
