It's not clear if a new Twisted Metal game will be coming, but it may be a perfect time for the series to return. Aside from the TV series, Twisted Metal has been in a holding pattern for over a decade, with no new games to speak of. While the franchise is dormant, it's not completely without hope. At the very least, there is still some level of interest in the series, and a fanbase that has persisted despite a lack of content. The question is whether a new Twisted Metal could succeed, and there's reason to believe it could.

Despite being an iconic demolition derby game series, Twisted Metal hasn't seen an installment since its attempted reboot in 2012. However, Twisted Metal's initial success came largely due to its formula. The games are fast-paced car combat exhibitions, with players using a plethora of weapons to destroy their opponents in order to win the Twisted Metal tournament. The series' framework also helped, with each game having a cast of colorful characters competing to earn a wish from the villainous host, Calypso. The wishes would often be twisted, lending the series a sense of dark humor. Another reboot could bring back its former glory.

Events are Aligning For Twisted Metal to End its Gaming Hiatus

The Twisted Metal Show Could Foreshadow a New Game

It's already known that Twisted Metal is getting a second season, which could provide an excellent opportunity for a new game in the series. Admittedly, the first season received its fair share of criticism, and featured a lot of radical changes from the games, but the second season does show confidence from Peacock. More importantly, it could be a sign that a new Twisted Metal game could have a chance. After all, the Peacock show did get more people talking about the series. Twisted Metal's recently increased name recognition could be the trigger that lets a new game come to light.

Twisted Metal's 30th Anniversary Could be Time For a Big Announcement

It should also be noted that the thirtieth anniversary of Twisted Metal and its mascot, Sweet Tooth, is approaching. November 5, 2025 will mark 30 years since the first time players were able to battle through Calypso's tournament, and that may be a perfect time for a big comeback. Twisted Metal ended up not having anything to show for its 20th anniversary, so it's overdue for a celebration. After being in limbo for so long, Twisted Metal can hopefully give fans a reason to be excited. A new installment to mark the series' 30th anniversary would be appropriate for the occasion.

A New Twisted Metal Could Take Players Back to the Classics

If these events do lead to a reboot, then it would be good to see something in the vein of classic Twisted Metal games. The 2012 game changed the formula heavily, so going back to basics may be a good way to please the fans. A game with a wide selection of cars, characters and maps, with solid driving and combat might be exactly what the series needs right now. Perhaps it could even add some fan-favorite vehicles and maps as an added bonus. Rather than reinventing the wheel, a Twisted Metal to mark a milestone should focus on the strengths of the games.

Twisted Metal is finally getting some time back in the spotlight, and the best way to capitalize on that would be to see Twisted Metal's return in 2025. The TV show is on the air, and the series' anniversary is approaching, so the stage is set perfectly for a comeback. A full console generation has passed without another Twisted Metal game, and hopefully that won't stretch on for another. Even without anything confirmed so far, 2025 would be an excellent time for Twisted Metal to return to the gaming world.
