In just a few weeks, Detective Pikachu will hit the big screen. While reviews have yet to drop for the ambitious video game movie, its trailers have earned it praise for its realistic portrayal of Pokemon, its humor, and the voice work of Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu. Whether or not the final product lives up to the hype generated by the trailers remains to be seen, but current box office projections are looking good for Detective Pikachu, and the film clearly has an enthusiastic fanbase, as evidenced by the absolutely bizarre True Detective/Detective Pikachu fan-made trailer that recently hit the Internet.

True Detective, for the uninitiated, is an anthology crime series on HBO. The first season of True Detective in particular earned quite a bit of praise for its philosophical themes, horror elements, and the award-winning performances of Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. The characters played by Harrelson and McConaughey spend the first season hunting down a particularly vile serial killer, which is pretty far from the family-friendly plot of Detective Pikachu.

Nevertheless, YouTube channel Sam & Bill Comedy put together a trailer that combines the bleak world of HBO's True Detective with characters from Detective Pikachu. The result is a trailer that's not only entertaining and full of Pokemon references, but also deeply disturbing to watch.

Detective Pikachu is not nearly as creepy as the True Detective Pikachu trailer, but it has also been accused of having some disturbing imagery. In fact, The Pokemon Company was worried that Mr. Mime would be too weird-looking for the photo-realistic art style in Detective Pikachu, which almost led to him being cut from the film entirely.

Of course, it's worth pointing out that Mr. Mime is generally considered to be creepy-looking anyway, even in the main series Pokemon games, so it's fitting that his photo-realistic version would be a little hard on the eyes. The Pokemon in general look great, though; there's a reason the film is being praised for its portrayal of Pokemon.

The Pokemon in Detective Pikachu all seem to fit the film's tone and style, but again, it remains to be seen how fans will react to the full movie. Early buzz around Detective Pikachu has been positive, but the real test will come in a few weeks when the film finally releases in theaters worldwide.

Detective Pikachu will premiere in theaters on May 10.
