Compared to other survival games, Tribes of Midgard spins things differently using two things: a top-down perspective, and base-building mechanics. As players control their Einherjar or Viking hero, they’re tasked to protect the seed of Yggdrasil from various enemies. Players of Tribes of Midgard do so by building a base around it during the day, and protecting it from enemies at night.

This unique system, alongside its 10-player cooperative Tribe system, gives players a more strategic take on the otherwise dog-eat-dog survival genre. Among some of the best items players can obtain in the game is a Golden Egg, which is something that can provide players with quite a tremendous advantage on their gameplay. However, just how should players obtain and use their Golden Egg?

What’s A Rune?

Runes in Tribes of Midgard

To recap, considering how Tribes of Midgard is a survival ARPG, gameplay in the title’s rendition of Midgard is considerably much more challenging versus the likes of more action-packed Torchlight and Diablo. And to fend off against the forces of darkness, players can equip a wide variety of Runes, with the 30 or so variants all capable of giving players a whole host of game-changing abilities. This considerably forces players to lean into a particular Rune-based playstyle, with the Golden Egg Rune being one of the Runes available in the game.

Compared to Diablo where Runes are reliant on socketable equipment to put them in, Tribes of Midgard Runes provide their effects immediately upon equipping them. Not only that, players can only equip a total of five (5) Runes on their person, six (6) if they’re a Warden with the Rune Carver Skill.

Why Is The Golden Egg Important?

What is the Golden Egg

Considering how fancy the term “Golden Egg” sounds in the context of Tribes of Midgard gameplay, there’s the immediate assumption that the Golden Egg Rune is a powerful artifact in the game. However, it’s interesting to note that the Golden Egg Rune has the following properties:

  • Status: Legendary
  • Ability: Grants two (2) Golden Horns on exit through the Bifrost
  • Selling Value: 2000 Souls

With these properties alone, the Golden Egg immediately establishes importance in players interested in the later stages of their Tribes of Midgard gameplay. Having a Golden Egg dramatically boosts the player’s odds of being able to craft Legendary gear, especially since Golden Horns are an integral part of this process.

What Is The Golden Horn?

The Golden Altar where Golden Horns are used

Given how the Golden Egg Rune is used mostly to obtain Golden Horns in Tribes of Midgard gameplay, surely there must be some value in these items, right? As it turns out, Golden Horns are an essential component in the title’s endgame component, with the Golden Horn being a rather rare in-game currency players could use to obtain much rarer items. Here’s how the Golden Horn is usually used in the Shop:

  • Offer in the Golden Altar: When players offer Golden Horns in the Golden Avatar, there’s a chance they might obtain a piece of loot. This is completely RNG-based, though, so players should spend their Horns at their own risk as they can gain Tribes of Midgard Gear instead of the Egg.
  • Get exclusive items in the Shop: A more surefire way of obtaining a Legendary Item players may want is to spend Golden Horns in the Shop. As expected, these Legendary Items often cost a hefty sum of Golden Horns, so players are expected to save up their Golden Horns before spending them on an item they desire.

How To Get The Golden Egg?

Combat in Tribes of Midgard

Due to the status of the Golden Egg as a Legendary Rune, it makes sense for players of Tribes of Midgard to assume the Golden Egg Rune would be difficult to acquire. However, despite its rarity, the Golden Egg isn’t some exclusive drop. In order to acquire the Golden Egg, players would have to do the following:

  • Get it via wild drop: Unfortunately, the Golden Egg Rune is best acquired after killing a random opponent in the wild. There’s no visible success chance in attaining a Golden Egg Rune, meaning its acquisition process through item drops is almost completely randomized. Players would have to take their time eliminating opponents and seize the item as soon as it makes its presence.
  • Get via Golden Horns: While a Golden Egg can indeed spawn Golden Horns upon leaving the Bifrost, Golden Horns could also be exchanged in the Golden Altar for Golden Eggs. This is a viable strategy for players who already attained a Golden Egg Rune. Likewise, players can kill Raid bosses and Giants to attain said Golden Horns, which they can then exchange for the Rune.

Is It Worth Keeping The Golden Egg?

Golden Egg in the inventory in Tribes of Midgard

With how players of Tribes of Midgard have to constantly balance their inventory slots with their limited equipment, it’s especially tricky to see whether there’s value in keeping the Golden Egg Rune in their inventory slots. Previously declared with no apparent use, the Golden Egg Rune’s ability to grant a possibly-continuous supply of Golden Horns per Bifrost exit is definitely tempting for the Tribes of Midgard farmer.

Players of Tribes of Midgard who are considering investing on endgame-level content may want to grab as much Golden Egg Runes as possible. Seeing as the game only lets players use a maximum of five (5) to six (6) Runes, this is the recommended number of Golden Egg Runes players should possess. Seeing as how Golden Horns are used for crafting Legendary Gear, farming-oriented builds should immediately have a couple of Golden Egg Runes to maximize gear acquisition.

Tribes of Midgard was released on July 27, 2021 for the PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S
