The 2025 Summer Anime Season is full of great hits, especially great returns, like Dandadan Season 2. Still, among many anime based on Shonen Jump series, there is a new series that might not have caught the attention of fans in the past few months, but it's starting to gain traction: Tougen Anki.
The story revolves around Shiki Ichinose, a teenager who one day is suddenly attacked by an assassin and learns that he is, in fact, an Oni and his adoptive father is a Momotaro who used to hunt Oni. After his father is killed, Shiki is suddenly in the middle of a centuries-long conflict between Oni and Momotaro.
Solo Leveling Season 2 Is Already Getting Surpassed By 1 New Anime
Solo Leveling season 2 was huge, but this one anime is taking away its spotlight.
Tougen Anki Streaming Almost Everywhere
Tougen Anki is a manga written by Yura Urushibara and serialized in Akita Shoten's Weekly Shonen Champion magazine, with 25 volumes released so far. The anime adaptation is handled by Studio Hibari (High Card), which also owns Studio Lerche (Classroom of the Elite). The anime is the directional debut of Ato Nonaka, who previously worked on My Hero Academia and Kengan Ashura. Yukie Sugiwara, the head writer of Overlord IV, is in charge of the scripts and series composition.
Long ago, there were Oni who devoured humans, and Momotaro, the hero who defeated them. The battle between the two continues even now.
Since Tougen Anki is not a Shonen Jump series, it didn't get much attention prior to its release, even though it features a promising main staff and cast, with Hiroshi Kamiya (Levi in Attack on Titan) voicing one of the characters. However, what soon caught fan attention right before its release was the number of streaming platforms airing the series: the series is streaming on Prime Video, Crunchyroll, Netflix, and even more platforms internationally. Availability is definitely not a problem for Tougen Anki fans, to the point that it would almost feel strange for them to watch it on unlicensed platforms, since the series can be legally found almost anywhere.
Tougen Anki Is Trending on Netflix
Unfortunately, Crunchyroll and Prime Video don't usually share much information about their most-watched shows on a regular basis. However, Netflix has a website dedicated to their most-watched titles every week, and Tougen Anki is featured in their global ranking this week.
Although we only have information from one streaming platform, the fact that it's trending on Netflix is a great sign and shows how much potential the series has to become a long-lasting hit. For instance, Sakamoto Days Season 2, a Netflix-exclusive anime adaptation of a Shonen Jump flagship title, hasn't made its way to this ranking. And since Netflix is the streaming service with the most subscribers worldwide, becoming a top-watched show is an amazing feat.
Would Solo Leveling Fans Enjoy Tougen Anki?
In addition to hitting on Netflix, Tougen Anki is a series with great potential to attract Solo Leveling fans. While these are two different series, Tougen Anki being more like Demon Slayer in its themes, they share some similar vibes. This is not meant to divide the fans and make them pick one over another, but people who enjoy series like Solo Leveling might find it worth giving Tougen Anki a chance.
Where to Read Tougen Anki?
Unfortunately, Tougen Anki is not officially available to read in English. Those who understand Japanese can buy the original volumes (digitally or in print) or even follow the latest chapters by reading Weekly Shonen Champion or the chapters available on Manga Cross. However, depending on how well the anime series performs this season, there is a good chance that the series will soon get an official release in English.
Tougen Anki is streaming on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Crunchyroll in the US.
