Having just wrapped up a successful 2025 outing, Tokyo Game Show has already announced a major change for TGS 2026, with the long-standing gaming expo expanding from four days to five days. This marks the first prolific adjustment in the event's formatting since 2002, making Tokyo Game Show one of the only in-person video game conventions to increase its offerings post-2020.
Tokyo Game Show originally debuted as a bi-annual event in 1996, with one showcase in the spring and another in the fall, before scaling back to an autumn exclusive in 2002 for a larger overall experience. Over the years, in-person video game events have seen a significant shift to online presentations, like Sony's State of Play, Microsoft's Xbox Showcase, Nintendo Directs, and the hit Summer Game Fest showcase hosted by Geoff Keighley. As such, it came as a pleasant surprise when Tokyo Game Show announced that it will be moving forward with a more robust IRL event in 2026.

Tokyo Game Show 2026 Expands to Five Days
The official TGS account thanked gaming fans and industry personnel for attending Tokyo Game Show 2025 and dropped the unexpected reveal of an extra day being added for 2026. Previously, TGS included two business days for approved media and corporate representatives to network with other companies and explore new developments in the industry. These were followed by two public days, where general guests could purchase tickets and explore various booths with game demos, talk to developers, sit in on panels from big-name studios, and buy exclusive merchandise from their favorite gaming franchises. Beginning in 2026, TGS will feature a third public day, offering five total days of video game announcements and early looks at upcoming launches.
At the time of writing, Tokyo Game Show has not given any particular reason for the massive expansion, but many are speculating that recent involvement from juggernauts like Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft driving attendance may have encouraged the trade fair to make the event more accessible with an additional day. Other key players like Capcom have consistently dropped huge surprise announcements during TGS showcases, driving online viewership higher and helping to make Tokyo Game Show one of the biggest gaming conventions in the world.
Despite post-2020 adjustments across the globe, particularly in the realm of video game events, Tokyo Game Show has continued to find success with its in-person offerings. Some of the most popular game announcements from TGS have been met with incredible hype from fans, encouraging AAA studios to invest more heavily in the expo and allowing for Tokyo Game Show 2026 to ready itself to be the biggest one yet.
