Toei is one of the biggest studios in Japan. They animate and own the rights to many huge series, some of the biggest in the history of the industry.
Recently, the top 4 best performing series, in different categories, were revealed.
Toei revealed sales in domestic licensing, overseas films, and overseas licensing.
Toei’s Biggest Franchise - Dragon Ball
When it comes to all categories combined, Dragon Ball takes the crown this time around. The total money made for Toei is 19 billion yen. The category where it shined most was in overseas licensing, where it came in first, and with a landslide. In the other two categories, it ended up in second place each time.
The Second Biggest Franchise For Toei - One Piece
One Piece is a huge series for Toei. It ended up second overall, just behind Dragon Ball. Out of 3 categories, One Piece was first in 2, only missing out on overseas licensing, which isn’t too surprising as the series has only started getting big overseas recently, but it still can’t compare to the decades Dragon Ball had. Its sales are 18.4 billion yen, which isn’t far behind.
The Third Biggest Franchise - Pretty Cure
Any series besides One Piece and Dragon Ball falls far behind. Pretty Cure, a magical girls series, makes it to third place, with a number of 1.3 Billion Yen overall.
The series mostly struggles with overseas licensing from the looks of it, as it didn’t make it in the top 4 in that category.
The Fourth Franchise - Digimon
Digimon has always been a popular series, reminding many of the Pokemon Series. Its number revealed was 1.06 Billion Yen, and that comes from a single category, which is overseas licensing.
Other Series
Other series also made it into some categories’ top 4, that includes Slam Dunk and Gegege no Kitaro, and Saint Seiya. Either way, no series even holds a candle to the numbers that One Piece and Dragon Ball are generating for Toei.
