Peacock has released the full official trailer for its upcoming limited series Joe vs. Carole, starring Kate McKinnon and John Cameron Mitchell. The series comes off the heels of the highly-acclaimed Netflix original Tiger King, drawing its character inspiration from the stories in the documentary
Based on the Wondery podcast Joe Exotic: Tiger King hosted by Robert Moor, Joe vs. Carole centers around known big-cat enthusiast Carole Baskin. She learns that fellow exotic animal lover Joe Exotic is breeding his cats for profitable gain, prompting her to stop his dealings. In doing so, however, Baskin creates a bitterly heated rivalry between herself and Joe, which exacerbates once Joe digs into her troubled past. The hypocrisy Joe sees in Baskin motivates his aggressiveness, creating an intense back and forth between two infamous characters.
The Joe vs. Carole trailer opens with Carole Baskin and her husband Howard Baskin acknowledging the unsettling tension between her and Joe Exotic, indicating that the animal lover is a "psychopath" who wishes her dead. The footage continues to spotlight Mckinnon and Mitchell in their roles, as the series looks to dive into the personal stories of each character's background. As things continue, audiences obtain insight into the madness that ensues from a hired killer to explosives and police raids. "It's war," states Carole Baskin in the footage, and from what audiences already know about these characters, it's sure to be a hysterical ride.
A similar Tiger King project looked to be arriving from Amazon, starring Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage as the quirky Joe Exotic, but the project sits on the studio's shelves for the time being. Cage indicated that the studio paused the project because it took a while to come together, which diminished the spark it initially had. The revelation of Peacock's Tiger King series may have been the driving force behind the decision to avoid competing with another platform carrying the same narrative.
Tiger King was undoubtedly the most discussed series during the early stages of the pandemic. The enthusiasm around the exotic animal lovers has certainly died down over the years, but a fresh look at the story and its colorful characters is sure to reignite the spark once more. All eight episodes o f Joe vs. Carole will be available once the series premieres, providing audiences the freedom to binge-watch the chaotic rivalry all over again.
Joe vs. Carole will hit Peacock March 3, 2022.
