Thymesia's bosses are no joke, they test the player's reaction and ability to read their attacks and punish them if they aren't able to. The first boss in Thymesia, Odur is easily one of the most difficult bosses in the game. He's swift and combo related and can definitely put players through a spin as it's the first boss they'll face. Unfortunately, Odur isn't quite as easy to take down as player's originally though as he returns to fight again in his mutated form.

Mutated Odur is an optional boss that players can fight to unlock various goodies such as a new plague weapon, memory shards and an alchemy enhancer. He is only able available to players after they complete all the related sub-quests in the first zone of Thymesia, The Sea of Trees. This includes beating the boss before him, The God of the Fools. Luckily for players, he's a bit easier than his first version, provided players have the upgrades and have levelled up before taking him on again.

Unlike his first variation, Mutated Odur only has one phase, so once players deplete his health he's gone for good. Mutated Odur's new gimmick is his Eldritch-inspired tentacles that come out from his back. These tentacles give him far more range than his original form, making him a bit deadlier than previously.

Swipe into Tentacle Swipe

  • Attack: This is one of Odur's most regular attacks and involves him swiping forward with his normal arm and following up with a swipe from his tentacles.
  • Counter: This attack can be quite easily dodged once players understand the timing of it. It's important to dodge out of the way of the second attack and not backwards as his tentacles have quite a high range.

Tentacle Swipe into Strike

  • Attack: This attack is essentially the opposite of the first attack, where Odur will swipe with a tentacle and then strike forward.
  • Counter: This attack like the one before can be dodged by understanding the timing. Dodging to the side is important to avoid the tentacle's range.

Tentacle Swipe into Leap

  • Attack: Odur will lash out with his tentacle, then jump backwards.
  • Counter: This attack is quite quick and not telegraphed well. Players will need fast reactions in order to dodge this attack. Fortunately, it doesn't deal a large amount of damage, and Odur will jump away afterwards giving players time to heal up.

Tentacle Spin

  • Attack: Odur will spin backwards, spinning his tentacle around.
  • Counter: This attack is used as a disengage for Odur. It's quite telegraphed purely based on Odur spinning away from the player. The timing of this attack can be quite tricky and catch players off guard, so be wary of the timing of this attack.

Vile Explosion

  • Attack: Odur will charge up and his cane will grow slightly gold. From there he'll sweep the floor pulsating out a gold damaging aura.
  • Counter: While heavily damaging, this attack has a long wind-up that makes it quite easy to dodge. Alongside being distinct, players should look for the golden glow on Odur's cane and react when the pulse reaches them.

Leap Strike

  • Attack: Odur will leap forward and slam with his tentacle.
  • Counter: This attack will only occur if the player is far away from Odur. It's quite telegraphed, so players should easily be able to dodge this one.

Jump Back and Slam

  • Attack: Odur leaps backwards and slams his tentacle in a long line forwards.
  • Counter: This attack is telegraphed, and can be countered via a feather. However, dodging is preferable as Odur can often jump out of the range of a feather toss, making this attack difficult to cancel.

4 Tentacle Strike

  • Attack: This move will have Odur rile up his tentacles, and slam down with them in a 4 hit combo.
  • Counter: This move has quite a long-range, so players will be forced to dodge in the timing of the attack if they're close. This attack only has one pattern, so players should memorize it and prepare to dodge the next one.

5 Strike Combo

  • Attack: Odur strikes rapidly in front of him, either with his arms or with his tentacles. On his 5th attack, it's possible that Odur will glow green, players can throw a feather to deal heavy damage and stun him during this time.
  • Counter: This again involves dodging to the timing of each attack. It's important to note that the player can be hit by a couple but dodge out of the way of the next, so don't give in as soon as his combo starts hitting. If the player is given the option, use a feather to stun Odur right at the end of this combo, as he'll pull out a knife and try and slam into the ground with it.

Ultimate: Charge and Grab

  • Attack: Like other ultimate attacks in Thymesia, Odur will glow red and charge up. Once fully charged he'll grab Corvus and deal heavy damage.
  • Counter: This attack is very telegraphed, so players should dodge away as quickly as they can to avoid being caught.

Talent Recommendations

  • Short Claw: Short Claw is still one of the best talents can invest into. The healing is incredibly useful in longer fights like this one.
  • Blessing: Blessing is another talent that is just generally useful. Having a percent chance to block an amount of damage can really help players get through a difficult fight. Alongside this, a tier 3 Blessing taken will allow the players to automatically heal themselves instead of being KOed provided they have a spare potion available.

A good note for beginners to Thymesia is that talents can be swapped out at any time via a Beacon, so players should feel free to swap around and experiment.

Plague Weapon

  • Most plague weapons will work in this fight, so players are advised to pick one that's either high level or one they're comfortable on. Shorter ranged plague weapons are more useful in this fight as the player will want to be close to Odur.

Potions

Both the Long Lasting Potion and Fast Acting Potion are suitable in this fight.

  • Long Lasting Potion can be great for players who want the sheer value of healing that the potion gives. They'll need to be careful while dodging away from Odur, as the potion can take some time to consume, meaning they'll need to be wary of potential attacks coming their way while healing.
  • Fast Acting Potion is great for its speed. As Mutated Odur utilises a lot of short combos, Fast Acting Potion lets the player get off quick heals in the midst of combat.

Gameplay Tips

Stick Close

  • Odur's tentacles have incredibly high range, and can easily catch players off guard. It's recommended that players stick close to Odur and dodge sideways instead of backwards to avoid them.

Be Prepared

  • This is the final fight within the Sea Of Trees zone. That means players must have beaten both regular Odur and The God of the Fools. Mutated Odur may not be quite as challenging as regular Odur, but he hits hard and isn't for the faint of heart. Players should look to take on Mutated Odur further on in the playthrough, as it makes the fight significantly easier with better gear and talents.

Similar to the first iteration of Odur in Thymesia, Mutated Odur can really give players a run for their money, so players may need to have multiple runs before getting this fight down.

Thymesia is available now for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
