Summary
- Thunderbolts* aims to spotlight a powerful new villain set to top the MCU hierarchy.
- Despite being overshadowed by other projects, Thunderbolts* is gaining traction.
- The short promo showcases the overwhelming power of Lewis Pullman's Sentry, setting up an exciting debut.
Thunderbolts* is the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next big thing, and the franchise seems dead set on handing the film’s exciting new villain a well-deserved position at the top of the card, as evidenced by a new promo spot for the project.
Thunderbolts* suffered from being overshadowed on both ends by other big MCU projects, with Captain America: Brave New World being both a bigger deal and sharing the same ‘grounded’ labeling that Thunderbolts* did, and Fantastic Four: First Steps marking a whole new era for the franchise. While even Daredevil: Born Again managed to eclipse the film when it debuted on Disney+, things are finally taking a turn for the better as the film nears release. Despite not being in the foreground, Thunderbolts* has managed to distinguish itself from The Suicide Squad and is now in full promo mode.
‘Probably An Iron Man’ Suicide Squad Star Wants To Join The MCU
A member of the Suicide Squad cast has admitted that they're interested in joining the MCU in the future.
While the film’s momentum suffered a big blow when Marvel Studios's Avengers: Doomsday cast announcement spoiled Thunderbolts*, a more recent short promo video for the upcoming film seems set to bring back some of the excitement. More so than the film’s ragtag group of rogues, fans have been eager for more about Lewis Pullman’s Sentry, and in a recent social media post promoting the upcoming film from Marvel Studios on X, they get to see some more of the film’s hero/villain in action. “He’s stronger than all the Avengers rolled into one,” Val says of Sentry in the voiceover, “And soon to be known as Earth’s mightiest hero.” The short video portrays one of the film’s leads questioning why a god would take orders from anyone, before Pullman’s character contemplates showing what he’s truly capable of and doing just that in a quick but villainously brutal scene.
You Should Be Very Afraid Of Bob, Guys
This short promo confirms that Sentry’s overwhelming power won’t be too altered in his MCU debut, scaling fairly well to the other characters ported over from the books. The MCU has seen its fair share of powerful villains, but if Thunderbolts* is putting out a version of the Void and his better half that are even half as powerful as their comic book counterparts, then there’s no contest. While it’s not very long, the trailer does a good job of showing off this immeasurable power, as the character turns multiple fleeing civilians (and what seems to be an entire office building full of people) into little more than charcoal silhouettes with a lethargic gesture. This also easily puts the character above and beyond the likes of the Hulk, Thor, and Captain Marvel, who left the Infinity Saga with the title of strongest MCU hero. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem likely that the MCU’s writers will let such a powerful radical remain on the board beyond Thunderbolts*, as he’d be too much to deal with no matter what side he’s on.
While they’ll be a long way off from comic feats like nullifying killing magic after the fact, it’s clear now that Sentry and the Void will be given an appropriate level of gravitas in Thunderbolts*, and Pullman’s filmography shows he’s the perfect choice for the role(s). It’s not clear whether or not the MCU has plans for him beyond the upcoming movie, or if the franchise will manage to file such a powerful villain neatly away after just one appearance like so many others. Whichever way things go, Thunderbolts* will certainly bring something interesting along when it hits theaters later this year.
Thunderbolts* is currently set for theatrical release on May 2, 2025.
