20 Nostalgic Anime That Aired On Toonami During The 2000s

Throughout the 2000s, Toonami aired several great anime that longtime fans will likely remember. These nostalgic examples are proof.

Ronin Warriors Gets a Sequel After 38 Years

Samurai Troopers got a few sequels and spin-offs in the 1980s and 1990s, but Yoroi Shinden Samurai Troopers takes a different approach. Instead of being a direct sequel to the story or a remake, as is common nowadays, it will feature brand-new characters and introduce a new generation of heroes. Not much has been revealed so far, except that the main character is named Gai, who will be voiced by Hiiro Ishibashi (Yuga Odo in Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens). The main character in the original series was Ryo Sanada, voiced by Takeshi Kusao.

The story will be set in present-day Shinjuku, following five boys who will wear the Yoroi Gear armor and challenge the demon emperor Arago. There is an expectation that the original heroes will make special appearances in the series, but nothing has been confirmed so far. Many classic series often introduce a new generation of heroes who are related by blood to the original characters, but this doesn't seem to be the case here. Nonetheless, we will need to wait for more information.

When Will the New Samurai Troopers Anime Be Released?

The new anime is set to be released in January 2026. The head writer is Shogo Muto, known in the tokusatsu fandom for writing Kamen Rider Build—since Samurai Troopers draws references from tokusatsu series, it makes sense to put someone familiar with the tokusatsu universe in charge of the story. Yoichi Fujita will be directing the series; he has directed many Gintama episodes (and many compilation movies).

No streaming services have confirmed to have acquired the license to stream this series yet, but we may get more information on this production at Anime Expo, set for July 3–6, 2025.

The original Samurai Troopers is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
