Have you ever had a conversation with a friend only to have The Simpsons come up in the conversation and one of you says "oh yeah...The Simpsons IS still on the air, isn't it?!" That's because The Simpsons has been a staple of Sunday nights on Fox for more than three decades, and it shows no signs of slowing down. While the length of the program is certainly impressive, if you were under the belief that it was the longest-running animated show on primetime, you'd be wrong.
In Japan, there is an anime that has been on the air longer than The Simpsons. It has racked up a much more impressive episode count. What is this show, how many episodes are there, and why haven't most people seen it?
What is The Simpsons?
The Simpsons is an American-animated sitcom created by cartoonist Matt Groening and produced by Emmy and Academy Award-winning director James L. Brooks for the Fox Broadcasting Company. It premiered on December 17, 1989, and has since become one of the longest-running and most influential television shows in history. The series satirically portrays a middle-class American lifestyle through its titular family - which consists of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie Simpson. The show is set in the fictional town of Springfield and humorously critiques American culture, society, television, and various aspects of the human condition.
Its cultural footprint cannot be understated; the show has not only introduced catchphrases like Homer's "D'oh!" Into the lexicon but has also spawned a wide array of merchandise, comic books, a feature film (The Simpsons Movie), and video games. Aside from being wildly popular, the series is acclaimed for its witty humor, intricate characters, and incisive societal satire, The Simpsons has garnered over 30 Primetime Emmy Awards.
What is Sazae-san?
Sazae-san is a popular Japanese comic strip and animated TV series created by Machiko Hasegawa. It first appeared as a comic strip in 1946 and was later adapted into a radio program in the 1950s. In 1969, it was turned into an anime television series, which quickly became one of the most beloved programs in Japan. The story revolves around the daily life of the Isono family, primarily focusing on the titular character, Sazae-san, and her interactions with her husband, son, parents, siblings, and neighbors. The episodes are typically slice-of-life vignettes, highlighting the humorous and sometimes touching moments of the character's everyday lives.
Sazae-san is unique in that it portrays the life of a strong, independent woman (Sazae herself) who often breaks the traditional norms of Japanese society (which is especially noteworthy when you take into account the context of the time it was created and the time period in which the show still takes place). The series provides a unique blend of humor, family values, and cultural insights, making it a favorite among multiple generations of Japanese viewers.
One interesting note is that despite its long run, the characters in Sazae-san do not age (much like The Simpsons). The show has retained its original setting and style, providing a nostalgic view of Japanese family life that contrasts with the modern realities of Japan, and many calls to modernize the series have been rebuked by the production staff who wish to preserve the look and feel of Machiko Hasegawa's creation.
How Many More Episodes Does Sazae-san Have Over The Simpsons?
Whether you realize it or not, Sazae-san holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-running animated television series of all time. Despite how American publications seem amazed at how many episodes there are of The Simpsons, the reality is that Suzae-san dwarfs The Simpsons by thousands of episodes. As of this writing, The Simpsons has been running for 34 seasons and contains 750 episodes, one movie, and several theatrical (and Disney+) exclusive shorts. This is an impressive number no matter how you slice it, so don't think the point of this article is to shame the family from Springfield.
That said, it pales in comparison to Sazae-san, which (as of this writing) has a whopping 8,540 episodes! Heck, for all we know, this series might have passed 9,000 episodes by the time you read this. One of the reasons for the sheer amount of content for Suzae-san is because the series premiered in 1969 and has pretty much aired new episodes non-stop on a weekly basis since then (with exceptions here and there when national tragedies would prevent the airing of new episodes).
Interestingly, despite the immense amount of content, the series has never been released outside of Japan or even on home video formats at the request of the manga creator's wishes (who was also against merchandising of the series). So even though there are many, many, MANY more episodes of Sazae-san than The Simpsons, at least The Simpsons earlier episodes are on DVD and Disney+ for new fans who may have missed them. Oh, and they also have a feature-length animated film, so there's that as well.
