After many decades of low-quality releases, the critically acclaimed adult animated series South Park finally got its first good video game adaptation in 2014, in the form of South Park: The Stick of Truth. This time around, Matt Stone and Trey Parker worked closely with Obsidian Entertainment to ensure that the final product would not only have the series’ signature style of humor, but that it would also play well.
Needless to say, they did not disappoint. The Stick of Truth is an accessible but endlessly entertaining turn-based RPG that keeps the player engaged with timed button inputs, in a combat system that’s reminiscent of the Paper Mario series. On top of that, its writing and its story are as hilarious, clever, and raunchy as one would expect from this IP, to the point that it feels like an unofficial South Park movie. Its sequel, The Fractured But Whole, is also a great game, but it only has "Very Positive" reviews on Steam.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt may be the third entry in the Witcher series, but it's the game that put both the IP and its developer, CD Projekt Red, on the map. Even though it came at a time in which western action RPGs were losing popularity, it still received glowing reviews from fans and critics alike, even winning the Game of the Year award in 2015.
But, what makes The Witcher 3 so special? That question is almost impossible to answer in just a few words. It’s overall a beautifully made RPG. Geralt of Rivia is a cool but complex main character, the monsters he has to slay are terrifying, and the world is brimming with interesting characters and fun side-quests to complete. The gameplay loop is addicting and the graphics are so detailed that they still hold up, even ten years after its initial release.

In 2015, Toby Fox and his team revolutionized the Indie RPG scene by releasing Undertale, a unique turn-based RPG with bullet hell combat that encouraged players to not kill enemies, and to solve conflicts in a pacifist way instead. Combine that with its amazing soundtrack, its emotional storyline, its zany sense of humor, and its low price, and it’s understandable why Undertale became a cult classic so quickly.

Deltarune is better in every way, with a more complex combat system, better music, more colorful and detailed graphics, and a longer, more interesting plot. Even though only four chapters have been released so far, each one of them is brimming with style and content. Rogue-likes are not for everyone, but Supergiant Games’ Hades is one of the most accessible ones out there, which is why this game has been praised so much since its 2020 release. Players take control of Zagreus, the son of the titular Hades, who has to escape from the Underworld by exploring many different dungeons and defeat hordes of enemies inside them.

The Like a Dragon games (previously known as Yakuza) are well-known for being wacky but endearing beat 'em ups. However, everything changed for this franchise in 2020, with the unexpected release of Yakuza: Like a Dragon. This entry ditched the series’ signature real-time action gameplay in favor of a turn-based combat system. Despite all odds, it ended up being a colossal critical and commercial success.
Shifting genres within a franchise is always a controversial choice, but Like a Dragon fans embraced the turn-based RPG gameplay because it maintained everything that had made the franchise so special in the first place. It’s enjoyable, dynamic, and over-the-top, not to mention that the rest of the adventure has a lot of fun secondary activities and silly distractions that the player can complete at their own leisure. Fans of this game should also check out its direct follow-up, 2024’s Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (which isn’t on this list because it has "Very Positive" reviews on Steam).

Developed by a team of around thirty people, the main selling point of Clair Obscur is its brilliant combat system, which utilizes real-time quick-time events to make the action more engaging, refreshing, and fast-paced. Its gorgeous presentation, its interesting and lovable characters and its rich narrative also contributed to this game’s massive popularity. At the end of the day, Clair Obscur is so well-made and so groundbreaking that it even succeeded in turning thousands of RPG haters into new fans of the genre.
