Summary

  • Season 4 of The Witcher to be released in 2025 with Liam Hemsworth replacing Henry Cavill.
  • Game of Thrones' Kate Dickie joins The Witcher Season 5 as Sigrdrifa, set in Skellige.
  • Producers promise a more lore accurate Season 4, filming for Season 5 in South Africa.

Fans of Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher are casting all types of hopeful spells for the upcoming release of Season 4 this year, but so far, viewers are left in limbo about its 2025 premiere window. However, in a bid to lift some of the anticipation, a new cast member has reportedly been announced who fans will recognize for their dramatic role in Game of Thrones.

Seasons 4 and 5 of The Witcher, which will cover Andrzej Sapkowski's three remaining books - Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake - won't be the same for many fans since the beloved Henry Cavill will now be replaced by Liam Hemsworth. Filming for the show's fifth and final season has been underway in Cape Town, South Africa. Although Netflix's The Witcher series had previously been shot in its London studios, as well as England's Lake District, Coldharbour Wood in Chichester, Bourne Wood in Farnham, and Deepcut in Surrey, season 5 has changed up its location and also using the town and sets that were built for a spin-off called The Rats: A Witcher’s Tale with Freya Allan’s Ciri, which closed its production doors on the project in 2023. Things have gotten a little busier on the Witcher production side, which is good news for fans who have been holding their breaths wondering how the next season will turn out.

Game of Thrones’ Kate Dickie Is Cast as Sigrdrifa in The Witcher Season 5

According to Redanian Intelligence, season 5 of The Witcher has brought on Game of Thrones' Kate Dickie for the role of Sigrdrifa. Along with this news, fans have also learned that the beloved region of Skellige will feature in season 5 to some extent. The island of Skellige is only briefly acknowledged in Andrzej Sapkowski's books, but in the video game, it is a popular location for Witcher fans due to its stunning landscapes, rich history, and interesting NPC culture. In The Witcher 3, Yennefer heads off to visit the goddess Freya on the island of Hindarsfjall, where she is introduced to the high priestess named Modron Sigrdrifa. Sigrdrifa seems to have telepathic abilities as she's able to respond candidly to Yennefer's worries.

Game of Thrones fans surely can't forget Kate Dickie, who played Lady Lysa Arryn, the sister of Catelyn Tully, who suffered from extreme delusional ideas and who was also very much in love with Littlefinger, to her own detriment. Lysa's life sadly came to an end in season 4 when Littlefinger pushed her through the Moon Door, as a shell-shocked Sansa looked on. Dickie has also starred in The Witch, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Loki. Dickie will be a great addition to The Witcher season 5 due to her ability to express a broad array of emotions and also the ability to hone in on the complexity of characters, so this will be a really exciting time to see the Scottish actor back on the small screen again.

For fans who weren't happy with how the story went in The Witcher season 3 and felt it swayed away from the books too much, producer Tomek Baginski previously reassured fans that The Witcher season 4 would be more “lore accurate.” Currently, no release date for season 4 has been announced other than it will release in 2025, but in the meantime, fans can rewatch all seasons of The Witcher on Netflix to catch up before the next season arrives.
