All eyes are on Netflix's The Witcher for Season 4 as the series is set to return with a different actor in the lead role of Geralt of Rivia. However, it appears that Henry Cavill may not be the only witcher leaving The Witcher in the new season.
The Netflix fantasy series is an adaptation of Andrej Sapkowski's novels, which follows the tales of Geralt who is a supernatural beast hunter known as a witcher. For three seasons Henry Cavill, a self-professed fan of The Witcher, led the series as Geralt, but in 2022 it was announced that the actor would be departing the series, with no reason given. Nevertheless, development on Season 4 of The Witcher continued with a new actor, Liam Hemsworth, recast in Cavill's role.
The Witcher Season 4 Has A Chance To Do Right By The Fans
The Witcher Season 4 could be a reinvention of the Netflix series in several ways.
News indicates that Cavill is not the only cast member to depart The Witcher in Season 4. Redanian Intelligence has reported that Kim Bodnia will no longer play Vesemir in The Witcher, after starring in the show in Season 2. The outlet was not able to confirm who would be replacing Bodnia as Vesemir, but Redanian Intelligence is generally a reliable source of information on The Witcher, so there's likely to be truth to this report. Bodnia was introduced as Vesemir, Geralt's mentor and a father figure to the group of Witchers, in Season 2 of the Netflix series. He did not appear in Season 3 of the series, as the plot moved locations from the Witcher stronghold of Kaer Morhen. However, this report indicates that Vesemir is set to return in Season 4 of The Witcher, but it won't be Bodnia who plays him.
It's unclear why Bodnia is departing the series, but given his character was not written into Season 3, it's possible the actor booked further jobs during his time away from the show, which could now cause conflicting schedules. Bodnia is a busy actor and is set to appear next in Joseph Kosinski's F1 alongside Brad Pitt, and Momo with Martin Freeman. Additionally, Redanian Intelligence has confirmed that Geralt's Witcher brethren Lambert and Coen will return in Season 4, with Paul Bullion and Zates Atour reprising their roles. This indicates that a Witcher reunion is on the cards for The Witcher Season 4, which will be a nice change after the group wasn't seen together in Season 3.
Netflix's The Witcher has received mixed reviews throughout its run. Much praise went towards Cavill for his performance as Geralt, but others have been disappointed by the show's divergence from Sapkowski's books. Bodnia's performance as Vesemir was considered a highlight in Season 2, but a new actor will now need to fill those shoes in Season 4, marking another shakeup for The Witcher in its upcoming season . Laurence Fishburne is also set to join the cast of The Witcher for Season 4 as fan-favorite Regis, so the series will not be lacking in talent. In any case, perhaps the multiple cast changes will aid The Witcher in entering a new era for Season 4, hopefully in a way that will win over fans.
The Witcher Seasons 1-3 are available to watch on Netflix.
