After a hugely successful first season, it's safe to say that The Witcher season 2 is one of Netflix's most anticipated upcoming shows. Production on The Witcher season 2 is underway for a 2021 premiere, and now some more casting information has been announced.
Along with the returning cast and characters from the first season, The Witcher season 2 will include Yasen Atour as Coen, Agnes Bjorn as Vereena, Paul Bullion as Lambert, Kristofer Hivju as Nivellen, Thue Ersted Rasmussen as Eskel, Aisha Fabienee Ross as Lydia, and Mecia Simson as Francesca. Some of these Witcher season 2 casting decisions were leaked before the official announcement, but fans will still be happy to have confirmation.
One character that is notably absent from The Witcher season 2 cast is Vesemir, Geralt's mentor. Previous reports have indicated that Vesemir will indeed be in season 2, with the role supposedly having been offered to the likes of Michael Keaton and Mads Mikkelsen. Both Keaton and Mikkelsen apparently turned down the opportunity to play Vesemir in The Witcher season 2, so it's possible that the character will still be in the show but has yet to be cast.
If the reports about Michael Keaton and Mads Mikkelsen being pursued for the role of Vesemir in The Witcher season 2 are accurate, then it seems to indicate that Netflix is looking for a relatively high profile actor to play the character. It remains to be seen who that will be, though there is one choice that many fans would like to see.
For years, fans have been asking for Star Wars star Mark Hamill to play Vesemir in The Witcher. Hamill has admitted that he doesn't know who Vesemir is or even what The Witcher is, but has gone on social media to express interest in playing the role nevertheless. The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has also expressed excitement at the possibility of Hamill playing Vesemir in season 2, so it could still very well happen.
Another reason why it wouldn't be outlandish for Mark Hamill to play Vesemir in The Witcher season 2 is due to his connection with Netflix. Previously, Hamill has appeared in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and will voice Skeletor in the streaming service's Masters of the Universe reboot. Hamill's history with Netflix combined with both fan and creator interest in seeing him play Vesemir could very well see him cast as Vesemir in The Witcher season 2 in an official capacity.
But if Mark Hamill truly is set to play Vesemir in The Witcher season 2, it looks like fans will have to wait a bit longer for the official announcement.
The Witcher season 2 is set to premiere on Netflix in 2021.
