  • The Witcher 3 will get cross-platform mod support later this year for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
  • The new feature, released later this year, will allow console players to download mods for the game for the first time.
  • CD Projekt RED introduces one shared modding ecosystem via mod.io for console and PC players.

CD Projekt RED has confirmed that cross-platform mod support will be coming to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt later this year. This will allow The Witcher 3 players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S to download mods just like PC players.

The Witcher 3 only received official mod tools from CD Projekt RED last year, but that hasn't stopped the game's creative fans from creating an active modding community over the years. With over 7,700 mods and over 170 million downloads on Nexus Mods, it's one of the most popular RPGs to mod of all time, with some creations standing out more than others. For example, earlier this year, another Witcher 3 mod allowed players to ride dragons, offering a new feature not seen before in the series.

The Witcher 4 has confirmed that Ciri will serve as the protagonist, but this shouldn't push one of Geralt's closest allies aside.

In an announcement on the Witcher website, CD Projekt RED confirmed that as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations for The Witcher 3, players will be able to enjoy cross-platform mod support across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The Witcher 3 mods will be uploaded and downloaded via mod.io, which will create one shared modding ecosystem. While PC players can already mod the game via other avenues, this will be the first opportunity for console players to get their hands on The Witcher 3 mods.

The Witcher 3 is Finally Getting Cross-Platform Mod Support

No release date was given for cross-platform mod support, beyond a vague "later this year." A short FAQ revealed a few important details about the update. Mods won't cost money, but players will need to have a mod.io account in order to access the features. Existing modding platforms like Nexus Mods can still be used on PC versions of the game, although these mods obviously won't be available to console players. Cross-platform mod support will allow for some mods created outside the official Witcher 3 REDkit, although this doesn't apply to any console mod that uses scripts.

Although The Witcher 3 is alive and well, much of the attention on the series seems to be on its upcoming sequel. The Witcher 4 sees Ciri take the protagonist mantle from Geralt, a change that should help the game feel fresher than anything the series has done before. CD Projekt RED has yet to give a concrete release date for The Witcher 4 yet, although it's not expected to launch any time soon.
