Anyone who is interested in the wild and intense world of cryptocurrency and who spends time on Reddit will want to check out the trailer for the upcoming thriller Cold Water, which Cutter Hodierne directs.

Cold Wallet follows vigilante Redditors who try to get revenge on a cryptocurrency scam and start a home invasion that goes wrong. Although they attempt to kidnap the influencer, played by Josh Brener, who led them down this path, things don't work out as planned.

The trailer shows the main characters realizing they owe over $60,000 and feeling lost and hopeless. They discuss their predicament and then go shopping for guns. While they attempt to log into the influencer's accounts and get money from him, they realize this home invasion isn't so simple.

Cold Water stars Raul Castillo, Tony Cavalero, Brener, Zoe Winters, and Melanie Diaz. Smile 2 fans will recognize Castillo, who played Darius Bravo in Smile 2, which horror fans can watch at home. Castillo's other film credits include Breathe, The Inspection, Night Teeth, and Knives Out. As for the cast's other projects, Winters starred on Succession, Brener appeared on Silicon Valley, Cavalero was in The Righteous Gemstones, and Diaz starred on the Charmed reboot. Cold Water's director Hodierne's previous work includes directing short films such as 2008's The Bicycle Thief and 2012's Fishing Without Nets. He also directed the feature-length version of Fishing Without Nets, which was released in 2014.

It's always fun to see a thriller movie that switches up the home invasion plot, and from the fast-paced trailer, it's clear that Cold Water tells a story that isn't what it seems. Of course, it would be boring if the main characters got exactly what they wanted from the opening scene, so they're likely going to struggle a lot before the movie's conclusion. Castillo's performance is already impressive in the trailer as he wrestles with the impossible situation that he is thrust into. Cold Water offers up a shocking and exciting story while having something thoughtful to say about financial pressures and cryptocurrency.

In an interview with The AU Review, Hodierne talked about working on Cold Water and explained that he took inspiration from the beloved Stephen King horror movie The Shining. He said:

" I know that’s a bold one to try and borrow from, but there’s something really cool about the big mansion, or in the case of that film the hotel. That starkness, mano a mano, not-in-a-hurry to cause pain…knowing the prey has nowhere to go. I don’t want to give anything away, but I feel like we were restrained when it came to the story going off the rails and the chaos erupting. But we still maintained a psychological urgency."

Cold Water premiered at the SXSW Film & TV Festival and will be in theaters and on digital on February 28th, 2025.
