In The Stone of Madness, the Gate of Saint Jerome’s campaign begins after you hand the madness stone to Panecillo. This marks the start of a longer journey to escape the monastery. The first mission tasks you with uncovering the purpose of the strange key you’ve received. This is just the start of a much larger adventure filled with challenging puzzles.
This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough for every objective in the first chapter of the Gate of Saint Jerome. Each section includes visual instructions to help you navigate more efficiently. Additionally, I’ve included helpful tips and notes to ensure you complete the first chapter of The Stone of Madness quickly and effectively.

Part One: Find a Lock That Fits the Key
Your first objective is to find the door that fits the mysterious key you were just given. You will first need to gather information by reading a hidden engraving. Here’s how.
- Step One: Find an oil lamp. There is one next to Agnes (south of the hall fireplace).
- Step Two: Investigate the footsteps. Using a lit oil lamp, interact with the footsteps near Agnes and follow them into the room next to the Saint Dympna statue.
- Step Three: Steal the keys. The footsteps will lead you to a painting. Interact with it so that you get the keys to the Garden Gate.
- Step Four: Enter the Garden. Use the key you just found to open the gate near where you found the oil lamp.
- Step Five: Explore the hut. Enter the room where you find a woman wearing a chicken hat (Tia del Nido). Take Eduardo there and move the box blocking the hidden door. Finally, read the engraving in the hidden nook and leave the hut. Now, Agnes is a part of the crew, too.
Part Two: The Mechanisms
Your new objective is to activate three mechanisms and read the engraving. For this, you will need to locate three head effigies and break into the monastery’s tower. Here’s how.
- Step One: You will need to bypass the first guard and enter the second floor. The stairs are located to the east of the Saint Dympna statue.
- Step Two: Activate the first mechanism. You will see a head effigy with a button in its mouth. You must use Eduardo to pull the nearby crate under this statue and climb up to activate it.
- Step Three: Investigate the Pianist’s room. The second mechanism is in the rightmost corner of his room. (Try to remain undetected by the Pianist.)
- Step Four: Expose the hidden doorway in the Pianist’s room. Using Alfredo, investigate the carpet to the left of his room’s entrance. This will unlock the hidden door which leads to the patients’ cell. Press the button near the cell’s gate to open a shortcut.
- Step Five: Steal the tower’s key. Head over to the guard’s room to the east of the patients’ cell (the room where a guard is sitting behind a desk). Steal the keys on the wall and leave.
- Step Six: Activate the last mechanism in the Apothecary. Use the stairs to the left of the Saint Dympna statue to access the other corridor. Use a crowbar to break the second door (Scrolls Archive) and steal the Apothecary keys. Use them to enter the door at the end of the corridor and activate the last mechanism.
- Step Seven: Enter the tower. Unlock the room at the other end of the corridor (near the stairs). Bypass or knock out the guards with Leonora to read the engraving on the wall.
Part Three: Beyond the Cells
This is the last objective of chapter one of the Gate of Saint Jerome campaign. During this part, you must free Leonora and discover a hidden engraving rumored to be in the refectory. Here’s how.
- Step One: Enter the refectory. Start by unlocking the gate next to the Apothecary (the room where you found the third mechanism in the previous objective).
- Step Two: Free Leonora. After entering the refectory, you will overhear a conversation that reveals Leonora’s whereabouts. She’s locked in, and you must save her.
- First, steal the kitchen’s keys. They are on a platform past the refectory. It’s best to use Amelia’s ability to traverse tunnels in order to reach the keys.
- Second, unlock the shortcut that connects the cell to the refectory. If you continue along the pass after getting the kitchen key, you will reach a lever that connects these parts of the map.
- Third, grab a lit oil lamp and investigate the kitchen with Alfredo. Read the books on the kitchen counter and climb the ladder next to Leonora’s cell. Finally, light the golden cherub here to free Leonora.
Wearing Alfredo’s Priest Robe before entering the kitchen is a good idea. This allows you to investigate the room without getting caught. Also, don’t worry about the last guard above Leonora’s cell; he won’t attack you for lighting the cherub.
- Step Three: Investigate under the carpet. After reading the books in the kitchen, you’ll discover that something is hidden beneath the carpet in the refectory. Wait until midnight, when the curfew begins, as this is when the guards leave the area. Only then can you investigate the carpet, but the room must be empty; otherwise, your character won’t proceed. (You can knock out any remaining guards or nuns to simplify the process.)
The Anima might spawn on the carpet, blocking your investigation. If that’s the case, use Alfredo’s Pray for the Souls abilities the night before so they don’t spawn during your investigation.
