Open Relationship Settings
Thanks to the introduction of the romantic boundaries setting, open and polyamorous relationships are now part of The Sims 4 base game, which means everyone has accept to these options without resorting to mods.
Create-a-Sim Settings
Gamers can set a Sims' romantic boundaries when first creating them. Later on, it's not possible to change them without using cheats. Sims can only be in an open relationship in The Sims 4 if they don't jealous towards some sort of romantic interaction between their partner and another Sim - this can be either non-physical, physical, or Woohoo.
Players that want their Sims to be able to enter an open relationship throughout their lifes need to select "no" to one or more of the following romantic boundaries:
- This Sim feels jealousy if any romantic partner engages in non-physical romance with other Sims
- This Sim feels jealousy if any romantic partner engages in physical romance with other Sims
- This Sim feels jealousy if any romantic partner engages in Woohoo with other Sims
Gamers must choose their preferences according to the type of relationships they'd like to pursue with other Sims besides their romantic partners.
For a Sim to be open to the thought of a polyamorous relationship in the future, their boundaries must be somewhat flexible. This means that gamers will have to select "yes" to the following romantic boundary:
- This Sim's jealousy triggers can change by talking about it with other Sims
If the Sim is strictly monogamous, they will have a "no" ticked in this section. To change this, use the cheat "CAS.fulleditmode" and modify it in the Identity Panel
Social Menu
Unless the Sim isn't willing to change their jealousy triggers, players can ask their partners to reconsider some of their romantic boundaries, making it possible for them to open the relationship.
To ask a Sim for an open relationship in The Sims 4, gamers have to select their romantic partner, open the Relationship tab, select "Change Relationship," and then "Ask to Reconsider Romantic Boundaries." Players can only ask a Sim to reconsider a romantic boundary at once; they will have to wait a while before bringing up the conversation again.
Once Sims are in an open relationship, they can engage in romantic activities with other Sims and they won't hurt their partner as long as they respect their current boundaries.
How to Set Up a Romantic Relationship With Multiple Sims
With the addition of romantic boundaries, it's possible to set up a polyamorous relationship in The Sims 4 as well. This can be done through actions in Live Mode or in Create-a-Sim when first creating household or with the "CAS.fulleditmode" cheat, which lets players edit everything about their Sims in CAS.
Once two Sims are in an open relationship, they can start dating separately or together. To start a relationship with more than one Sim, players will have to make it so the initial couple is in a relationship with the same person. Here's how:
- In CAS, open the "Household Relationships" menu and make sure that the Sims involved all have established romantic relationships with each other.
- In Live Mode, engage in romantic behavior with the desired Sim (without breaking any boundaries) until they're ready to become partners with both Sims.
It is only possible to be in a relationship with more than one Sim if all the Sims involved are able to witness their partners engaging in romantic behavior with other Sims without becoming jealous.
