How Autonomy Works in The Sims 4

Autonomy is a powerful mechanic in The Sims 4, and although players can't have complete control over it, they can change how much it affects their gameplay.

Gamers won't be able to fully control how a Sim feels, as their emotions are based on the events happening in their lives as well as their surroundings. However, they can decide how much free will they would like the Sims in their household to have, as they can completely take over their actions. This means that players can control if a Sim will go to the bathroom on their own, but they won't be able to prevent a Sim from feeling Uncomfortable in The Sims 4 if their needs are too low or if their surroundings are dirty.

How to Disable Autonomy

There are several autonomy options that gamers can toggle on and off to meet their preferences and preserve their Sims' lives. Players can change Autonomy settings in The Sims 4 by opening the Menu, selecting Settings, and then opening the Game Options tab. Here, they can either set Autonomy to Off or Full.

In The Sims 4, if Autonomy is set to Full, Sims will try to take care of their own needs to the best of their abilities. However, this will allow them to freely roam around the world and do as they please. This can be quite disastrous, as it's not uncommon for Sims to be reckless and end up in bad situations. Gamers can turn off autonomy, which makes it so Sims only take autonomous actions if it's to keep themselves alive, such as attempting to escape a pool if they've started to feel exhausted.
