This article contains spoilers for The Outer Worlds.
When the first teaser for The Outer Worlds 2 dropped in June 2021, it came with the tagline: “New star system. New crew. Same Outer Worlds.” Since then, Obsidian Entertainment has been fairly mum about where the anticipated sequel will take place. The most that fans have been told is that it will take place in the Arcadia Star System, according to the Steam description for The Outer Worlds 2. This means that players will be leaving Halcyon behind and embarking on a brand-new adventure.
That’s not to say that the characters of the first The Outer Worlds will be completely off the cards, but it is likely that most of the characters players met in the first game will not be returning. However, since this is a game all about space exploration enabled by faster-than-light technology and the reach of different mega-corporations across the stars, fans may get to meet some of their old friends and foes from The Outer Worlds – although this time around, it will be in a completely different time, place, and person.
What to Expect From The Outer Worlds 2 in 2025
Obsidian recently announced that The Outer Worlds 2 releases in 2025, but there's likely a long road between now and then.
Characters Who Could Make a Comeback in The Outer Worlds 2
- Lilya Hagen
- Junlei Tennyson
- SAM
- Ellie Fenhill
- Martin Callahan
Lilya Hagen
Lilya Hagen is the CEO of the Sublight Salvage & Shipping company, with her headquarters aboard the Groundbreaker. Lilya’s company is infamous for its black-market dealings, described as a salvaging network with “transportation” and “waste disposal” services. The Groundbreaker is the one thing in Halcyon that isn’t tied down by the forces of gravity – especially true depending on which The Outer Worlds ending players choose – so it’s entirely possible that fans will see Lilya and other Groundbreaker characters return for the sequel.
Junlei Tennyson
There can’t be a conversation about the Groundbreaker without mentioning its chief engineer. Most of Junlei’s missions in The Outer Worlds revolved around helping her fix the Groundbreaker’s systems and clearing out undesirables from its depths. Junlei was also the subject of a rather charming romance quest involving Parvati, one of the player’s beloved companions.
SAM
Short for “Sanitation Automechanical Maintenance,” SAM is a mass-produced sanitation robot-turned-weapon that spews pre-programmed corporate slogans in lieu of true artificial intelligence. It can be a devastating The Outer Worlds companion capable of tanking and dealing serious damage. Depending on how widespread these units are, it would not be out of the question for SAM – at least, a SAM – to make an appearance somewhere in Arcadia.
Ellie Fenhill
Ellie is one of the rare The Outer Worlds characters to survive regardless of the player's choices. A trained doctor, trust-fund baby, and poser privateer, Ellie's ending is left with one of two outcomes, both of which leave her on the Groundbreaker. In one of those endings, she eventually gets her own ship and heads off on her own adventure. It's possible that her adventure will take her somewhere in the Arcadia system.
Martin Callahan
Another character so beloved that some The Outer Worlds players wish they could romance him, Martin Callahan is the face of Spacer’s Choice aboard the Groundbreaker. This is literal, as Martin wears the Spacer’s Choice Moon Man head so often that, with enough poking and prodding, he will dryly say, “I think it’s part of me now.” Even if players don’t get to see Martin again, it would be nice to see at least one character who nods to the unofficial mascot of the franchise.
Bonus: Auntie Cleo
Though not seen in the flesh in The Outer Worlds, Auntie Cleo's presence was felt throughout the game, and it seems she is slated to have a much larger role in the sequel. In The Outer Worlds 2' s first gameplay trailer, it is shown that Auntie Cleo has bought out her rival competitors, Spacer's Choice and Rizzo's, which are now called Auntie's Choice Co. And Fizzo's, with posters of the latter bearing her likeness. She was also the antagonist of the Outer Worlds episode of Amazon's Secret Level.
