Not much continues to be known about the multiplayer Witcher game being developed by CD Projekt studio The Molasses Flood, but a new job listing suggests that it will be an open-world title. Known by the codename Project Sirius, the upcoming title is just one of several upcoming games set in the world of The Witcher, and it appears to be taking a cue from CD Projekt Red’s past work.
The Polish developer’s adaptations of Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher novels have provided gamers with many memorable dark fantasy RPG experiences. This is especially true of 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which has gone down as one of the most highly acclaimed games of the past ten years and a hallmark of open-world design. Things have stayed mostly quiet for The Witcher since, outside of Netflix’s TV adaptations, but that is something the slate of future games including Project Sirius will address.
CDPR Reveals How The Witcher 4 Development Will Differ From Cyberpunk 2077
A senior CD Projekt Red official highlights one important aspect in which The Witcher 4 development will differ from that of Cyberpunk 2077.
The specifics of The Molasses Flood’s Witcher game remain shrouded in secrecy, but a job listing suggests Sirius will, like The Witcher 3 before it, boast a large setting for players to freely explore as they like. The Boston-based studio is looking for a Senior or Principal Level Designer for Project Sirius, and according to the Job Description section of the listing, it states that whoever takes on the role will be in charge of creating spaces set in The Witcher’s “Slavic open world.”
Being that The Molasses Flood is a rather small studio compared to CD Projekt Red, it’s hard to say if the game’s map will be anywhere close in size to The Witcher 3’s massive open world. However, the job listing stresses the need to “create gameplay rich and environmentally story dense spaces,” so chances are fans can expect to find the narrative depth the Witcher games are known for scattered across Sirius’ world, regardless of size.
Other than that, the listing reaffirms Sirius’ status as a multiplayer-centric Witcher game by requiring candidates to have “experience building for multiplayer.” No mention was made of the single-player campaign that is said to be included in the game as well, and it’s presently unclear if it is still being worked on following the restarting of Project Sirius’ development earlier this year.
There are many ways a multiplayer-centric Witcher game could go, and no doubt fans will speculate on them while they wait for the upcoming games. Aside from Project Sirius at The Molasses Flood, an open-world remake of the first Witcher game codenamed Project Canis Majoris is being developed by Fool’s Theory. Meanwhile, CD Projekt Red is at work on the series’ fourth mainline entry, codenamed Polaris, which will kick off a brand new saga of Witcher games.
The Witcher is a 3D action RPG series developed by CD Projekt Red featuring the exploits of Geralt of Rivia. Steeped in fantasy, The Witcher series is based on the books by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.
