From when she is first introduced, Ellie is the heart and soul of The Last of Us Part I. Her joyful humor and playful mannerisms turn what would otherwise be an incredibly dour game into what is at times an uplifting experience. One of her patented techniques for bringing laughter to the player is by cranking out her joke book, given to her by Riley in the Left Behind DLC. In order to hear all of Ellie’s terrible jokes in The Last of Us Part 1, the player must pay close attention to her in the game’s quieter moments.
As with other optional conversations, jokes will trigger when Ellie is approached and interacted with in specific locations in The Last of Us Part I, though it may take a little while for her prompt to appear, so players will need to be patient. This guide will show players where and how to trigger all of Ellie’s jokes to grab the “That’s all I got” trophy.
Ellie will only break out the jokes in Pittsburgh, the Suburbs, and in the Left Behind DLC, so players needn’t worry about hearing them until Chapter 5.
Pittsburgh | Alone and Forsaken
Joke 1 of 3
This chapter starts with an ambush by Hunters, part of The Last of Us' many deadly factions. After combat ends, Joel and Ellie will make their way through a building littered with the stolen possessions of less fortunate travelers. Upon making their way outside, Joel will point out a distant yellow bridge and drop down to street level. Walking down the street a little, three Hunters will climb over a bus blocking a quarantine zone checkpoint and walk down the street. After killing them or letting them pass, players should approach the bus but not climb over just yet. Instead, they should wait for Ellie to pull out her joke book and interact with her when needed.
Joke 2 of 3
Just after climbing the aforementioned bus, the duo will reach a large bookstore that acts as a combat area. After clearing out all the Hunters, players should head to the second floor and stand by the burning barrel close to the exit. After a short conversation, Ellie will tell another joke, giving players time to appreciate Part 1's improved visuals.
Joke 3 of 3
After leaving the bookstore, Joel and Ellie will emerge onto a flooded street and see a pair of Hunters use a plank to cross some sunken vehicles into a hotel. After this scene ends, players should turn in the opposite direction of the Hunters and head to the dead-end side of the street. In this area, Ellie can interact with a poster of a skinny woman as part of an optional conversation. Following this, players can cross to the other side of the street and wait for Ellie to tell a joke.
Pittsburgh | Hotel Lobby
Joke 1 of 1
After following the Hunters into the hotel lobby, players should open the safe behind the check-in counter. Afterward, they'll want to take the ladder up to the second floor and, before heading up the stairs to the left, wait for Ellie to pull out her joke book and interact with any prompts.
The Suburbs | Suburbs
Joke 1 of 1
The final joke players can trigger in the main story appears much later, after Joel and Ellie escape the city and emerge from the infected-ridden sewers. This takes players into a suburb where they can explore a few houses and get to know Henry and Sam better. In order to trigger this joke, players must first engage with all three optional conversations in this area. After doing so, they should follow the street past the ice cream truck and to a dead end. Here, Ellie will pull out her joke book and read her last one.
Left Behind | Fun and Games
Joke 1 of 1
All the rest of Ellie's jokes are heard toward the middle of the Left Behind DLC as she and Riley explore the Liberty Gardens Mall. During this chapter, Ellie will flashback after grabbing the first aid kit from the military helicopter. In an iconic PlayStation couple moment, Ellie and Riley can ride around the lit-up carousel, after which, a cutscene will trigger in which Ellie is given her joke book. At this point, she can opt to read jokes for as long as the player can bear to hear them. To listen to them all and earn the "That's all I got" trophy, players simply need to continue to press the Triangle button until Ellie runs out of puns.
The Last of Us Part 1 is currently exclusive to PS5 and is in development for PC.
