Throughout The Last of Us Part 1, players can find a range of optional conversations to engage with in order to learn more about their traveling companions as Joel and Ellie make their way across the country to reunite with Tommy. These conversations range in tone, from humorous asides to serious discussions, and help the player to better understand the world of The Last of Us Part 1.

This chapter in The Last of Us Part 1 takes Joel and Ellie to the dilapidated city of Pittsburgh where they are set upon by a group of Hunters. This guide will show players where to find all optional conversations in Pittsburgh to help unlock the "Getting to Know You" trophy.

This guide excludes Ellie's unique joke interactions, which count towards a separate trophy.

At the beginning of the chapter, Joel and Ellie will be ambushed by a group of Hunters. Once the fighting ends, players should head across the street and help lift the garage door. Once on the other side, they should talk to Ellie about the pile of stolen clothes and dead bodies, rendered in all of Part 1's visceral beauty.

After heading through the building, Joel will point out a distant yellow bridge and drop down onto street level. After passing by a bus containing the first Savage Starlight comic book, players can approach a rusted white car with a skeleton hanging out and wait for Ellie to approach to talk about it.

Shortly after the last conversation, Joel and Ellie will vault over a bus after dealing with some Hunters. Before heading through the turnstile to the bookstore, players should look to the right to see some graffiti on the wall by some sandbags. They can then talk to Ellie about it when she catches up.

After getting through the bookstore, the duo will emerge onto a flooded street where they will see a pair of Hunters use a plank to enter a hotel where players can find a safe. When the scene ends, players will want to turn in the opposite direction to the Hunters and look at the store windows on the right. There, Ellie will see a poster of a skinny woman and will want to talk about it.

After reuniting with Ellie in a cutscene where Joel is kicked from a ladder, the pair will make their way through some hallways and into a large ballroom with a grand piano. In a corner is a sunny beach backdrop, by which Ellie will stand and can be spoken to.

Pittsburgh | Financial District

As of the current patch 1.001, the number of conversations to be found in the Financial District is mislabeled in the Chapters menu. There are, in fact, four conversations in this section of the game.

Next, the pair will leave the hotel and Joel will deal with Hunters as Ellie covers him with a rifle. After killing the Hunters and triggering a cutscene, players should look around the area to see a large tree by a cop car. If they wait nearby for Ellie to approach, they'll be able to talk to Joel about the hanging bodies.

After cutting through a garage, Joel and Ellie will fight their way down a street toward an abandoned Ration Depot. At the intersection, it's possible to take a right and look at the graffitied wall by the tank to start another conversation.

Conversation 3 of 4

The Last of Us™ Part I_20220902082741

Shortly after the last optional conversation, Ellie and Joel will climb up a fire escape to make their way around a building. Dropping back down to street level, the pair will come across a Military Preparatory School, like the one Ellie attends in the Left Behind DLC. Stopping in front of the gate and tapping Triangle over Ellie’s head will trigger a new conversation.

The Last of Us™ Part I_20220902082827

The final optional conversation in The Last of Us Part 1's longest chapter is found directly across the street from the last one. Players should head into a corner by some tipped dumpsters and look for the Dawn of the Wolf Part 2 poster. Approaching this poster will trigger an interaction with Ellie.

The Last of Us Part 1 is currently available for PS5, and is in development for PC.
