Summary

  • Season 2 will mostly stay true to the plot of The Last of Us Part 2.
  • Bella Ramsey learned to play "Take On Me" in Season 2, which the creators praised.
  • Expect the inclusion of Pearl Jam's "Future Days" song in Season 2.

Now that The Last of Us Season 2 is out, fans can expect to see plenty of cool references they have enjoyed from The Last of Us Part 2, and one beloved scene between Dina and Ellie has been made even better due to Bella Ramsey going above and beyond to make sure it was faithfully adapted to the show.

Even though Season One of The Last of Us saw quite a few changes from Naughty Dog's game, like Bill and Frank getting their very own backstory, the introduction to the ruthless leader of Kansas City's resistance group, Kathleen, and Ellie's birth scene, Season 2 will mostly stay true to its main plot and for those who haven't played the sequel, it'll certainly entail some very dark themes. Fans have already seen that Joel is going to therapy in Season 2 with Gail, a pot-smoking therapist and resident of Jackson, but things don't seem to be going too well, as it was discovered that Joel had to kill her husband, Eugene. However, the main crux of the premiere was Ellie and Joel's strained relationship and how different the pair had become from what they were before. As the episodes continue, more turmoil is in store for the pair as tragic events unfold, but beneath the show's somber exterior, one wholesome moment can be celebrated.

The Last Of Us Season 2: Bella Ramsey Portrays A Much Less Mature Ellie Than The Second Game Did

Bella Ramsey hasn’t visibly aged much since Season 1, leading some fans to doubt they can convincingly portray a 19-year-old Ellie.

As seen on VGTV, a Norwegian entertainment news channel, The Last of Us TV series creators, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, confirmed that not only does Bella Ramsey play the iconic A-Ha Take On Me song from the game in Season 2, but that they even learned how to play it. Druckmann said that the scene just had to go into the show and that Ramsey taught themselves how to sing the song and learned all the guitar chords for it, too. "It was pretty incredible to watch," gushed Druckmann, while Mazin explained that even just being there as a fan and watching the scene play out was "just so beautiful."

Druckmann even went as far as taking a video recording on his phone of the wholesome moment and sending it to Paul Savoy from A-Ha, who happens to be the guitarist who wrote Take on Me, saying that Savoy was "super excited" at seeing the iconic song being played in Season 2 of The Last of Us. Isabella Merced, who plays Dina, also revealed that she couldn't hold back her tears while Ramsey played the song. "That scene means a lot to me, and the set was perfectly recreated, and it felt really magical."

Another important song from the games could be making its way into Season 2 of The Last of Us. In the HBO podcast for the show, Mazin and Druckmann revealed that they decided Pearl Jam's 'Future Days' song was far too important not to be included in Season 2 in some way, as its meaning is "incredibly important" to Joel and Ellie's relationship.

The Last of Us Season 2 will premiere on HBO at 9 pm EST every Sunday until May 25.
