GameMill Entertainment and Odaclick Game Studio have announced The Karate Kid: Street Rumble, a brand-new game that takes players through the original Karate Kid films in the style of a 1980s retro side-scrolling beat-'em-up. The Karate Kid has seen a bit of a resurgence in the 2020s thanks to the hit success of the Cobra Kai TV show being brought onto Netflix. The show focuses on the cast of the Karate Kid franchise, specifically antagonist Johnny Lawrence as an adult after the events of the original trilogy. Cobra Kai is entering its sixth and final season, and will be getting a new video game to celebrate The Karate Kid's 40th anniversary.

The Karate Kid film trilogy has only a couple of video games to its name, which include a game based on the second film, and an NES Karate Kid game developed by Atlus and published by LJN. In 2021 and 2022, GameMill Entertainment published a duology of Cobra Kai video games, with both being beat-'em-up side scrollers that loosely adapt each season of the show, allowing players to play as any of the fighters from Miyagi-Do, Eagle Fang, or Cobra Kai dojos. GameMill Entertainment is publishing a new game based on this franchise, taking things all the way back to the 1980s.

An announcement trailer for Street Rumble was first uploaded to IGN's YouTube channel, revealing the game to be a 16-bit-styled multiplayer side-scrolling beat-'em-up. Unlike the aforementioned Cobra Kai games, The Karate Kid: Street Rumble uses 2D pixel art and sprites, as opposed to 3D models. As such, this game appears to be a send-up of other retro-styled throwback beat-'em-up titles like TMNT: Shredder's Revenge or River City Girls. The Karate Kid: Street Rumble will be launching September 20, 2024 for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch systems.

Who Is Playable in The Karate Kid: Street Rumble?

As this is a game set during the original Karate Kid films in the 1980s, fans get to control a young Daniel LaRusso as he contends with antagonists from the original film, including Johnny Lawrence, John Kreese, and Terry Silver. Players will also get the choice of different co-op partners, including Mr. Miyagi, Ali Mills, and Kumiko, with this beat-'em-up game supporting four player local co-op.

The game will have 12 different stages inspired by the original Karate Kid trilogy, including West Valley High, Cobra Kai's dojo, and more. To compliment the intentionally retro look, it has a chiptune-style soundtrack and 16-bit styled graphics. Many fans of Cobra Kai and the original films were incredibly impressed with the trailer, as it was a stylistic throwback in the same vein as the aforementioned TMNT: Shredder's Revenge, but applied to the Karate Kid IP.
