Summary
- Sticks are essential for survival in The Forest, players can find them in Small Trees or by dismantling wooden items.
- Locations like North of the Yacht and Around the Shipping Containers offer abundant sources of Sticks for base-building.
- Exploring areas like Edge of the Mountain or North of the Sinkhole can provide Sticks, but players must contend with cannibals.
Being a survival horror game, The Forest offers players several ways to survive the horrors of solitude in a mysterious forested peninsula populated by cannibals. As soon as players find themselves roaming around the game after a horrific plane accident, the in-game menu will let them know that they can use Sticks to construct a wide variety of equipment and structures to help them outlast the game’s many threats.
7 Great Survival Games With No Hunger Meter
While hunger is a common mechanic seen in survival games, there are some titles that opted not to include one.
However, players might suddenly run out of Sticks in unsavory situations: creating a temporary shelter at night, creating additional armor, or even creating a marker after reaching an unknown destination. Thankfully, the game has abundant Sticks—provided players know where to look for them.
10 Small Trees
Small And Thin Trees Provide Sticks Instead Of Logs
|
Location |
Almost everywhere, usually in the lower half of the overworld map |
|---|---|
|
Area of Interest |
Often interspersed with Large Trees, some are found alone amid grasslands |
The easiest way to find Sticks in their The Forest playthrough involves cutting down Small Trees scattered around the game world. They are characterized by their smaller stature and thinner barks, making them vulnerable to just a few hits compared to Large Trees. Unlike Large Trees, which only respawn after the stump is removed and with the “Regrow” setting turned on, Small Trees automatically respawn upon saving and exiting the game.
With this in mind, players need to identify the kind of Small Trees that contain a lot of Sticks when cut. Small Trees either produce four (4) Sticks or two (2) Sticks, depending on their variety:
- 4 Sticks: Maple (Bare, Basic, Winter), Ficus (Bushy Fig Sapling)
- 2 Sticks: Maple (Sapling), Ficus (Small, Medium Fig Sapling)
- 1 Stick: Azalea (Azalea)
9 Pre-Existing Wooden Items
Items Made Out Of Wood Will Likely Yield Sticks
|
Location |
Almost everywhere, usually close to abandoned villages and shelters |
|---|---|
|
Area of Interest |
Structures that seem to be made of sticks, such as Storage (Stick Holder, Log Sled), and other structures |
Players enjoying their The Forest sessions know that the Survival Guide is their best way of navigating the game’s merciless environments. However, it’s also their best reference for finding some of the best sources of Sticks: Pre-Existing Wooden Items.
The principle behind this is tied to the game’s premise of being a survival game where players can dismantle interactive objects for raw materials. Essentially, it makes sense for wood-like objects to contain Sticks when dismantled. This is especially prevalent in furniture and structures in the overworld that already look like items in the Survival Guide, such as those under Storage, Crafting, and Building. Stick-containing items around the peninsula include Stick Holders, Animal Traps, and Bonfires.
8 Pre-Existing Cannibal Items
Villages With Cannibals And Mutants Likely Have Wooden Items With Sticks
|
Location |
Almost everywhere, usually in abandoned villages and towns |
|---|---|
|
Area of Interest |
Structures created by Cannibals that are often adorned with bones, such as Effigies and Skull Lamps |
The “horror” half of The Forest and its survival horror classification is related to the constant threat of mutant cannibals throughout the peninsula. As players may notice, their first encounters simply involve mutated humans that may eventually wear armor out of sticks and bones alongside basic cavemen-like implements. When players explore more of the game, they may encounter more mutated creatures with multiple appendages and varying degrees of power.
However, players looking for Sticks may succeed in finding them should they locate the settlements of these very cannibals. Like abandoned towns with pre-constructed items from the Survival Guide, the cannibals in The Forest also have their special structures and Pre-Existing Cannibal Items. Dismantling their Skull Lamps and various Effigies can provide players with some Sticks.
7 North Of The Yacht
Forested Area Overlooking The Beach
|
Location |
The forested area just north of the Yacht |
|---|---|
|
Area of Interest |
Small Trees should be populating the forested regions north of the Yacht and after the beach |
When players start exploring the peninsula by day in their The Forest playthrough, they will likely encounter the Yacht just beyond the beach. Exploring this location will unravel mysterious and unsettling drawings that can prepare players for what they can encounter in the game’s infamous underground Caves. However, this location is also important in determining one of the best locations of Sticks in the survival horror title.
5 Survival Games With The Best Gunplay, Ranked
These video games manage to perfectly combine engaging survival gameplay, as well as satisfying gunplay into one cohesive whole.
By the time players find the Map underground, they will realize that the Yacht is located on the southernmost part of the peninsula. This is an important anchor in terms of base-building, as the area just North of the Yacht and beach has one of the best sources of both Wood and Sticks. From the perspective of the north of the Yacht, the location should have another small island to its southwest. This specificity is important, as directly northeast of the Yacht beyond a lake are up to four cannibal villages.
6 Around The Shipping Containers
Access To An Vibrant Sea View And A Couple Of Islands
|
Location |
The immediate area beside the Shipping Containers |
|---|---|
|
Area of Interest |
Small Trees should be abundant just above the shoreline alongside Large Trees |
Going north of the Yacht and trailing west should be a forested location filled with its fair share of Large and Small Trees. This area Around the Shipping Containers is perfect for base-building due to the abundance of trees. Similar to the Yacht, this location in The Forest gameplay gives players access to a wonderful view of the sea, this time to the west alongside a couple of islands.
This is a prime location for base-building, as its immediate east are forested areas where players can extend their base. Key stopping areas would be directly the Shipping Containers, and anywhere with Cave Entrances as they are near cannibal villages.
5 Around Goose Lake
The Most Neutral Location For Both Sticks And Action
|
Location |
East of the Shipping Containers, with a lake containing geese |
|---|---|
|
Area of Interest |
Immediate vicinity has pockets of water perfect for Fishing, while Large Trees and Small Trees populate the area save for the Sinkhole |
When players open The Forest for a fresh playthrough, their plane crash can bring them to a multitude of locations around the peninsula. Among the more popular “neutral zones” for players to begin would be Around Goose Lake, as the area itself has sources of decent drinking water, plenty of fish, the occasional cannibal from a nearby village, and most importantly, an abundance of Large and Small Trees.
Topologically-speaking, Goose Lake is directly east of the Shipping Containers, making the former’s location overlap with the latter when it comes to Stick abundance. However, the vicinity of Goose Lake extends further east and a bit south. Locations to watch out for would be the Sink Hole as to its northwest and southeast are cannibal villages.
4 East Of The Sinkhole
Isolated Land Can Become A Paradise
|
Location |
East of the Sinkhole, beyond the large river |
|---|---|
|
Area of Interest |
Cannibal villages are located to the immediate southeast, while Large and Small Trees are not guaranteed to respawn in the area |
One of the most challenging parts of any The Forest playthrough would be contending with the constant threat of cannibals while exploring the peninsula. Villagers of cannibals and mutants generally populate the central portion of the overworld in a northwest-to-southeast diagonal line, leaving generally no “safe room” for players to comfortably stay in a location without cannibals spotting them.
Best Isometric Survival Games
Isometric graphics give these survival games their unique charm and gameplay perspective.
However, for players looking for Sticks to help create their base, an efficient location to search for them would likely be East of the Sinkhole. Located just beyond the large lake, this cliffside area is relatively empty and inaccessible to cannibals unless they go all the way to the northern border of the Mountains. This location is heavily populated by Large Trees and Small Trees, although not all of them respawn. This can potentially leave players with a rather flat area by the time they complete their base and other Stick tools. However, this location can also easily reveal enemies as they spawn, giving players enough time to transform their Sticks into useful tools.
3 Edge Of The Mountain
Area Just Before Dangerous Terrain Is Perfect For Collection
|
Location |
The forested area just trailing the base of the Mountain |
|---|---|
|
Area of Interest |
Save for a couple of cannibal villages to the west, a majority of the Mountain’s edges contain Large and Small Trees ready for Stick harvesting |
Unlike an island, a peninsula has one side that is not facing the water. In the case of The Forest gameplay, players can locate this area up north via the Mountains. This ice-cold region is in itself a hazard for players, requiring them to stay close to a heat source if they don’t want to die of hypothermia. While this location is an impassable northern border of the peninsula, its edges serve as a decent source of Sticks for players.
Save for locations to the west populated by cannibal villages, a good portion of the direct Edge of the Mountain should contain Small and Large Trees for Stick Collection. This, in turn, establishes these locations as decent areas to create a base, as the Mountain provides a natural barrier to the north while players only have to worry about their other borders for protection against cannibals and other mutants.
2 Southeast Of The Peninsula
Constant Cannibal Threats Can Pose A Challenge
|
Location |
Directly east of the Yacht, up until the end of the peninsula with four islands |
|---|---|
|
Area of Interest |
Small and Large Trees should populate areas north of the shore, but the area has the most number of cannibal villages |
One of the most enjoyable aspects of The Forest gameplay is its multiplayer component, as many players can hasten mechanics such as base-building, fighting enemies, and even finishing the story. Combat becomes more dangerous in multiplayer as cannibals become more vigilant to the player’s presence. However, this is all the more reason players must collect Sticks for their base-building.
Players looking for a challenge in this regard should go Southeast of the Peninsula, directly east of the Yacht. Trailing the area north of the shoreline should be populated with Large and Small Trees, but also with their fair share of cannibal settlements. Aggressive players who get to kill the cannibals in the area can claim their areas for their own, acquiring instant bases through their tents and towers. While players should watch out for the periodic cannibal respawn, their presence should make the game more engaging for them.
1 North Of The Sinkhole
Safe Center Bordered By Cannibal Villages
|
Location |
Directly north of the Sinkhole, in the middle of two lakes on the east and west, and the Mountains to the north |
|---|---|
|
Area of Interest |
Cannibal villages are located east, west, and to the south. Potentially limited numbers of Small Trees |
While the area North of the Sinkhole in The Forest gameplay still has its fair share of Large and Small Trees, players looking for Sticks might notice the area being not as lush compared to other locations. The presence of Large Trees and Small Trees in the area may be adequate for Stick farming, but they’re not guaranteed to respawn in the same amounts compared to locations below the Sinkhole.
The area is bordered by a small river to the west and another river leading to the peninsula’s major lake to the east. Both locations have clusters of cannibal villages that players need to watch out for. To the north of the location is the edge of the snowy mountains that form the impassable northern border of the peninsula.
