Given the costumes and the vehicles that have been shown in the trailer, it is clear that The Fantastic Four: First Steps is a period movie that will be set in a specific time. However, Deadline has now revealed that the movie will not be an origin story despite it being the first time these heroes have been introduced to the MCU. Instead, The Fantastic Four: First Steps will commence four years after the team becomes heroes, meaning they will already be established in their roles. This is part of a one-shot comic book that will be published alongside the movie, marking the first time that Marvel's comics and studio side have worked together on a comic set specifically within a film.

Not doing an origin story makes sense at this point, given how well-known the Fantastic Four are as characters. Several movies have already shown this in detail, and it's likely that Marvel will still allude to what happened and how they gained their powers, as their venture into space has been hinted at within the trailers. Doing that is a wise move, as Marvel has the chance to quickly inform people how they got their powers without dedicating the film's entire first act to just that moment.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps will likely benefit as a movie from not going through the process of explaining why each character ended up with superpowers, and it will allow this version to feel unique. They will likely have gone through some highs and lows during the four years before the point of the movie, which will inform the personalities they have and the way in which they view each other.
