The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall is the second Elder Scrolls game, expanding on the gameplay of The Elder Scrolls: Arena and boasting a colossal world map. Players are able to navigate the regions of High Rock and Hammerfell, in an effort to learn the truth behind the ghost of King Lysandus' mysterious appearance in the city.

One of the best ways to play The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall today is via Daggerfall Unity. This is an open-source recreation of the game in the Unity engine, which can be more easily installed on modern systems and supports mods via Nexus Mods. This guide will explain how to get Daggerfall Unity installed and ready to play.

The Easy Way (GOG Cut)

One of the easiest ways to set up Daggerfall Unity with an assortment of mods to make the experience even smoother is by downloading the GOG Cut. Available from Good Old Games/GOG, this is a free download that handles all the setup on its own and leaves players with a ready to run Daggerfall Unity, complete with an assortment of popular and non-immersion breaking mods to enhance the experience.

This is a great way to get the game up and running with minimal difficulty, and is a great way to start up Daggerfall with minimal fuss. That said, players wanting to customize their experience rather than running with a pre-installed mod loadout will want to try the next option.

The Hard Way (Manual Install - Allows more Customization)

The other way to install Daggerfall Unity is by setting it up from scratch, which means players can pick and choose the mods and changes they want to make use of from the very beginning. Players will need the original Daggerfall game files in order to do this, which are fortunately available for free from several sources, including Steam.

Install Using Steam

Daggerfall

Players will first want to install Daggerfall from the Steam Page so that the files are available on their computer. After this, they should head to the Daggerfall Unity Website (https://www.dfworkshop.net/) and go to the downloads section for Daggerfall Unity. (Not Daggerfall Unity Mods, just Daggerfall Unity)

Players can then download the latest version of Daggerfall Unity as a zip file. Unzip it to a folder (ideally named "Daggerfall Unity_<Version Number Here> so it's easy to find later) and then open the folder to find DaggerfallUnity.exe and run it. Players will be prompted to set the path to their Daggerfall game files, which by default will be "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Elder Scrolls Daggerfall\DF\DAGGER".

Players who have a different install location for their Steam games will need to navigate to that folder instead. The easiest way to find a steam folder is by using the file explorer search bar and typing "Steam" into it. Inside the steam folder is the steamapps folder, and inside that is a folder called common. Game file folders can be found inside that, including the Daggerfall game files folder.

Once the path has been set, the launcher window should turn green, and players just have to set their resolution and graphics quality to complete the installation and get started playing.

Install Using Game Files from Bethesda.net

Players can also download the full game files from Bethesda.net for free, and then follow the same steps as before to download Daggerfall Unity, pointing Daggerfall Unity to the game files in whatever folder they are saved to when prompted to set the path. This works nearly identically to installing via Steam, but just requires players to download and unzip the game files from "https://elderscrolls.bethesda.net/en/daggerfall" instead of installing the via Steam.

The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall is available on PC.
