Amazon has confirmed that their adaptation of The Boys, a grimdark superhero story featuring edgier versions of typical superhero stories, will indeed be getting a third season. This news ensures that fans of the show will have something to look forward to even after season 2 drops on Amazon Prime September 4.
The announcement was made by showrunner Eric Kripke along with the cast during their Comic-Con@Home panel. After revealing that season 3 had been green-lit, Kripke stated, "The writers and I are hard at work in the (virtual) writer’s room and we’re sad to say, the world has given us way too much material. We hope to be shooting in early 2021, but that’s up to a microscopic virus."
The panel discussion also revealed that season 2 of The Boys would be getting its very own behind the scenes features. Kripke continued, "As if that wasn’t enough, we’re bringing you a season 2 after show, Prime Rewind: Inside The Boy s. Double entendre intended. Hosted by the incomparable Aisha Tyler and guest-starring the cast and crew."
Aisha Tyler herself was excited to comment on the project, remarking: "I became a fan during season 1 and this season I’m stoked to be flying fans into the heart of the show as host of Prime Rewind: Inside The Boys. Season 2 is bigger, badder, and more audacious than ever before, so join me after every episode as we dig through the rubble pile of our feelings. I promise, we’ll get through it like The Boys — dysfunctional, but together.”
For those unfamiliar, The Boys is available on Amazon Prime streaming, and is based on the comic book series of the same name. Originally by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys follows Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid), as he gets entangled in the fight between corrupt superheroes and an anti-superhero resistance led by Billy Butcher (Karl Urban).
The first season was released to critical and audience acclaim, its foul-mouthed perspective on costumed heroes offering a stark contrast to Marvel's more family-friendly projects. With the news of season 3 confirmed, it seems as though Amazon is banking on an ongoing hunger for cynical superheroes.
The Boys season 2 will be available to stream through Amazon Prime on September 4.
